Disney Theatrical Productions under the direction of Thomas Schumacher presents Aladdin, the North American tour, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin, starring: Adi Roy (Aladdin), Marcus M. Martin (Genie), Senzel Ahmady (Jasmine), Jake Letts (Babkak), Colt Prattes (Kassim), Ben Chavez (Omar), Anand Nagraj (Jafar), Aaron Choi (Iago) and Sorab Wadia (Sultan) directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw

We’re so excited to see you perform here in Vancouver. Where is home for you?

I grew up in a suburb called Fairfield, right outside of Napa Valley in Northern California.

Have you played Jasmine before?

I’ve never played her before! This is actually my first professional role in musical theatre. Jasmine is an absolute dream role of mine.

What are you most excited about touring Canada? Will you have time to get to know Vancouver? Anything you plan to do and see?

I’m excited to see it in the summertime! My family has skied in Vancouver before and so I’ve never seen what Canada looks like when it is not snowy and cold. I’m hoping to have some really good food and maybe find some good places to hike and sightsee in Vancouver!

How is it playing Jasmine? What do you love about it?

I love getting to play my favourite Disney princess of all time. I grew up with her as my role model because she was the only princess that represented all of us MENASA (Middle Eastern/North African/South Asian) girls. She was the first POC princess that Disney introduced to their line of princesses and so she plays a very important role in representation for brown girls like me. There’s nothing better than meeting other little brown girls at the stage door and getting to be that representation for them in a show like Aladdin.

What are the challenges in playing her?

I think it’s very challenging to play a character that everyone knows so well. Everyone is so familiar with the movie and I know some people expect to see that exact version on our stage, but I think it’s fun to see all the small parts of ourselves that we bring to these iconic characters.
