As we age, and our skin-needs change, the importance of individualized skincare and finding the product that’s right for you grows. It’s a natural process Biotherm believes in embracing, and the recent release of two new products, Blue Pro-Retinol Multi-Correct Cream and Blue Therapy Uplift Day Cream, proves just that! We chatted with Johanna Caron, Biotherm’s International Scientific Communication Manager, to learn more. —Vita Daily
Today we’re talking about embracing the aging process; what does that mean to you, in terms of beauty and skincare?
Beauty is diverse. There are as many different beauty expectations as different people. We hear more and more that people want to look the age they feel in their heart and mind. Looking better but still themselves. Indeed the last few years have been challenging. From the climate crisis to COVID, all these elements have urged people to focus on health and wellness. This awakening of individual consciousness has made people more active in breaking stereotypes and striving for a sense of authenticity and control in life. They want to live better, and not necessarily just to look younger. Beyond the focus on classical anti-aging, people are looking to improve signs of fatigue and look healthy and rested. We’ve shifted our mindset to looking and feeling our best for our own well-being.
What are some common aging “concerns” (or, is there a better way to put it?) that many people are looking to tackle?
Many studies have described the changes in skin properties (e.g., wrinkles, sagging, colour) with age, but few of them have analyzed their influence on the perceived age. Indeed, the facial appearance of a person does not always reflect the chronological age; some people look younger or older than they really are. The studies show that skin colour uniformity (= less dark spots) is the second most important factor that influences one’s age perception. With wrinkles, those two parameters are main contributors to the perceived age and probably the reason why they are also the two main aging concerns for people. In terms of face area, the eye area is one of the main attributes influencing one’s perceived age. Our eyes tell the story of our lives, expressing who we are and the emotions we feel. Yet, often our eyes can look tired. And, the more we smile, the more expression lines appear on the skin surface. This is why it’s important to take care of the eye contour. For this zone which is one of the most fragile of the whole face, specific products have been designed such as Blue Pro-Retinol Eye Cream (launching in September 2023).
When it comes to Biotherm’s Blue Pro-Retinol Multi-Correct Cream, what does this product contain, what does it target, who is it for and how can we use it for optimal results?
Among anti-aging agents, retinoids are the most promising ingredient. Tretinoin is the most potent and best-studied retinoid, but its irritation potential has prompted dermatologists to switch over to less irritating but comparably effective retinoids like retinol and pro-retinol that can also be used in cosmetics. In Blue Pro-Retinol Multi-Correct Cream we have combined our core ingredient, Life Plankton, to pro-retinol for women who are looking to reduce the look of wrinkles and have a more luminous and radiant skin. By associating Life Plankton with pro-retinol, the efficacy of pro-retinol is multiplied by 1.5. The cream fights the settling in of aging signs and smooths the skin’s surface. It has been clinically proven to reduce the look of different types of wrinkles and makes the skin smoother, more luminous with a refined skin texture. Retinol and pro-retinol are not just for older people. They can be used as early as the 20s to help maintain skin’s youthful look. You can start using our formulas with retinol if you notice fine lines, wrinkles, or uneven texture. It is an optimal fit to the Blue Retinol Night Serum to push the anti-aging efficacy further. I personally recommend finishing the product routine with Blue Pro-Retinol Eye Cream.
When it comes to Biotherm Blue Therapy Uplift Day Cream, what does this product contain, what does it target, who is it for and how can we use it for optimal results?
Scientific studies show that skin loses 1 per cent of collagen per year. This indirectly impacts skin firmness and skin density, therefore worsening the appearance of signs of aging and skin resilience. To fight this, Biotherm has crafted Blue Therapy Uplift Day Cream. It relies on the combination of Life Plankton with skin firming Collagen peptides fraction. Thanks to this unique combination, Blue Therapy Uplift Cream has a proven lifting effect and increases skin firmness and elasticity. This rosy cream offers instant beautifying benefits and long-term radiance and is ideal to use when first signs of sagging appear. For optimal anti-aging results, I recommend combining it with Blue Retinol Night Serum. While using Blue Retinol Night Serum, it’s important not to forget UV protection. Life Plankton Serum is another good ally to Blue Therapy Uplift Cream for efficacy in skin surface renewal of its appearance. With the highest concentration of Life Plankton (5 per cent) it truly helps skin achieve a healthy glow.
Any tips on switching up our skincare routine for summer?
I believe it’s very important to “listen” to one’s skin. In the summer, my skin usually craves lighter textures like the Blue Pro-Retinol Multi-Correct Cream as it is fast absorbing with a lightweight texture. With more exposure to the sun, SPF also becomes much more important, especially when using retinol, so make sure to apply our Soin Solaire Visage for face and Lait Solaire Corps for body for SPF protection. Adopting a body ritual is also essential. With more bathing, swimming an sun exposure, I recommend using body lotions such as our Life Plankton Body Milk and our Oligo-Thermal After-Sun Milk.
