8 Steps To DIY Dehydrated Citrus Fruits

July 11, 2023

Dehydrating citrus fruits is a great way to preserve their flavors and extend their shelf life. Here’s a step-by-step guide to dehydrate citrus fruits:

  1. Select fresh and ripe citrus fruits: Choose firm, juicy citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, or grapefruits. Look for fruits that are free from bruises or blemishes.
  2. Wash the fruits: Rinse the fruits thoroughly under cool water to remove any dirt or residue on the skin. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
  3. Slice the fruits: Use a sharp knife to slice the citrus fruits into thin, even slices. Aim for slices around 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Remove any seeds if necessary.
  4. Pre-treat (optional): You can pre-treat the citrus slices to help preserve their color and flavor. Dip the slices in a solution of lemon juice or citric acid mixed with water (1 tablespoon of acid per 1 cup of water). This step can help prevent browning and enhance the citrus flavor.
  5. Arrange the slices: Place the citrus slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays or baking sheets lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Make sure the slices do not overlap or touch each other to allow proper air circulation during the dehydration process.
  6. Dehydrate the citrus slices:
    • Dehydrator: Set your dehydrator to a temperature around 135-140°F (57-60°C) and place the trays inside. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended drying time, typically ranging from 6 to 12 hours. Rotate the trays occasionally for even drying.
    • Oven method: If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can use your oven. Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature (usually around 140-170°F or 60-75°C) and place the trays inside. Prop the oven door open slightly to allow moisture to escape. Check the slices regularly and rotate the trays for even drying. The drying time can vary but may take 8 to 12 hours or more.
  7. Check for dryness: The citrus slices are fully dehydrated when they are dry, leathery, and brittle. They should easily snap or break when bent. If any moisture or stickiness remains, continue drying for additional time.
  8. Cool and store: Allow the dried citrus slices to cool completely before storing them. Store them in airtight containers or resealable bags in a cool, dry place. Properly dehydrated citrus slices can last for several months to a year when stored correctly.

Dried citrus slices can be enjoyed as a snack, used in baking, added to teas or infused water, or used as decorative elements in crafts or culinary presentations. Enjoy the tangy and concentrated flavors of dehydrated citrus fruits! —Vita Daily
