5 Must-Try Foods at BC’s Farmers’ Markets This Summer

July 12, 2023

One of the best parts about spending a day at a BC farmers’ market is stepping into a culinary adventure of local cuisine. It’s no surprise that many of BC’s most popular food businesses got their start at a local market-  think A Bread Affair and The Juice Truck

In our opinion, grabbing a bite at a local market is one of the most fun ways to explore BC’s food scene – and with over 145+ markets across the province, it’s easier than ever!

Case in point, here are five must-try foods that you can find at a BC farmers’ market this summer:

Churchkela (Chella): A traditional Georgian snack originating from the 8th century, Churchkela is a tasty snack (think energy bar, but better!) made with walnuts, wheat flour and fruit juice, and comes in four flavours: White grape, white grape and pomegranate, red grape, apple and cinnamon.

You can try Churchkela at the Downtown Vancouver, Coquitlam and New West markets – and be sure to check out their Instagram account to see where they’re headed this week: @chellacanada.

Alfajores by Griselda: Alfajores are a popular South American artisan pastry made with two, melt-in-your-mouth, shortbread cookies filled with dulce de leche and rolled in shredded coconut.

Alfajores by Griselda’ , owned by Griselda Martin, is a business that came to life during the pandemic, and came about during the pandemic. Try the alfajores at the James Bay Community Market in Victoria this summer.

Nick’s Famous Jerky: Jerky lovers unite! Ambitious 8-year-old entrepreneur, Nicholas Mcmillan is sharing his small handmade batches of beef jerky in several delicious flavours: Kung Pao, Sweet N’ Spicy, Cracked Pepper and of course Original. For those who are tired of salty and tasteless jerky, young Nick feels your pain, and that’s why he’s created his small batch jerky made with 100% natural ingredients.

You can find Nick’s Famous Jerky at markets in the Thompson-Okanagan region: Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, and Vernon Farmers’ Market.

Jeggs Okonomiyaki: In Japanese, Okonomi means “whatever you like” and Yaki means “grill”. If you’ve never tried this delicacy, Okonomiyaki is a savoury Japanese pancake made of various ingredients and mixed with special batter, then grilled on the iron griddle.

You can find Jeggs Okonomiyaki in the Sea to Sky region at the Squamish Farmers’ Market or Whistler Farmers’ Market this summer. Follow their IG for latest info.

La Poblanita Tamales: Serving up delicious traditional Mesoamerican dishes, La Poblanita is known for their delicious tamales made from scratch, following grandma’s recipe. The tamales are made of masa dough made from nixtamalized corn, which is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf and filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and chilies.

P:S: They have also just added tacos to their menu! You can try La Poblanita Tamales at the Squamish Farmers’ Market this summer.

Voila, those are just five of the delicious foods you’ll find at your local market this summer. You can explore more vendors and unique cuisines via using the BC Farmers’ Market Trail, a mobile directory that makes it easy to explore all of BC’s markets and vendors – by region, community, season, days open, market name, and other features such as whether they’re dog-friendly or wheelchair accessible.
