If you’re looking for a new way to make bedtime a bit easier and keep your littles entertained—and off screens—this summer, Yoto’s adorable, just-for-kids audio devices should be on your radar.
The U.K.-based educational tech company was founded in 2015 by two fathers and self-described technophiles, Ben Drury and Filip Denker, who were inspired to develop an audio device for kids that is connected but also screen-free. The first prototype was developed a few years later following a successful Kickstarter campaign, and today, the company offers a third-gen Yoto Player for at-home use and the more portable Yoto Mini for kids to play on-the-go.
The latest Player, launched in June and recommended for kids ages 3+, can play music, audio books and even podcasts in English and French. Kids just have to insert a Yoto Card to listen, and parents can control the player and add new content via the app.
It offers acoustically engineered stereo sound, plays for 24 hours before requiring a charge, and can multitask as a regular Bluetooth speaker, room thermometer, night light and clock. And—perhaps most importantly—unlike your cellphone, tablet and the smart displays in your home, the player is microphone-, camera- and screen-free, and none of the free audio content includes advertisements.
Simple to use and charmingly designed, the Player is fun for kids any time of day. But it can also be a major help for parents at bedtime—in fact, the company mentions on its website that “Ninety per cent of parents agree that Yoto has made bedtimes easier for their family.”
To wind down the day, kids can listen to everything from educational books to calming bedtime stories on the Yoto Player. It turns into a coloured night light in seconds and can stream sleep sounds, white noise or a dedicated “sleep radio” stream until even the fussiest sleeper has drifted off to dreamland. —Truc Nguyen
