Vancouver’s 5 Best Sandwiches

July 18, 2023

The humble sandwich can be deceivingly difficult to get right. Many factors are at play. The fillings must be well balanced and the bread has to be just right. These are five of our favourite Vancouver sandwiches. —Bronwyn Lewis

The Doofer at Say Hey Cafe & Deli. The meatball is beloved, the vegetarian Richie with feta and beets is fantastic, but the Doofer is our current favourite sandwich at Say Hey. It has spicy turkey roast with bacon, cheddar, red onion, shredduce, and crispy onions, with a smokey chilli mayo.

Full Focaccia Panini at La Grotta Del Formaggio. La Grotta offers the ultimate build your own sandwich experience so choose whatever fillings you would like. The Full Focaccia is massive but it’s also a fantastic deal if you consider it’s two meals.

Full Nelson at Nelson the Seagull. Good bread makes good sandwiches. The Full Nelson is deceptively simple but Nelson’s sourdough makes it special. With old fashioned ham and aged cheddar, it’s the kind of sandwich you feel nostalgic about.

Chicken Parm from Burdy. It all started with the Chicken Parm for this food truck. Definitely add the pickled serrano peppers and pickled fennel and onion. Note the softness of the Tall Shadow Bakery brioche bun.

Avocado sandwich at Finch’s Tea House. Finch’s sandwiches are beautiful, and the baguette is just the right texture for a sandwich, not too crusty or too soft. The Avocado is a simple and satiating vegetarian sandwich. Opt for Dijon mayonnaise as well as the olive oil and balsamic.
