Bali Water, the newest sensation in the beverage industry, has launched its revolutionary ready-to-drink cocktail in a can just in time for summer. Crafted with three primary ingredients and inspired by the vibrant culture of Bali, this premium vodka beverage offers an experience that will transport you to your personal paradise with every sip. We chatted with brand co-founder Chris Bowes to learn more. —Vita Daily
When and why did you launch Bali Water? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
My partners, Mike and Jeff, returned from their travels through Bali and Southeast Asia right before the pandemic. They brought with them an innovative idea to blend fresh coconut water with vodka soda to create a distinctive RTD. Discussing Bali’s unique water challenges led us to envision a brand that could contribute positively through our Bali Water Protection Program. The essence of our product has always been the purity of taste, which is why we dedicated nearly two years in the pursuit of the finest raw ingredients. Our aim was to evoke the taste of the refreshing juices and cocktails served on the beaches of Bali.
What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?
Currently, Bali Water features four distinctive flavours that encapsulate the essence of Southeast Asia – Coconut Water, Mango, Pineapple, and Watermelon. The launch of our Island Originals Variety Pack this summer has been met with an overwhelming response. Our uniqueness stems from creating a simple, three-ingredient product right in Southeast Asia. The fruits used for our juices are harvested from our partner’s farms, enabling us to regulate the genetics and the ripening process.
What’s rice vodka? And what other special ingredients are included?
Just like traditional vodka, rice vodka is distilled but using rice grains as the base rather than corn or sugarcane. The choice of rice was inspired by the iconic rice terraces of Bali and the subtly sweet aftertaste it lends to our beverages. The level of carbonation was another aspect we fine-tuned to ensure a delicate balance – we aimed for light carbonation with tiny bubbles!
What’s the inspo behind these drinks, and how do they transport us to a more tropical locale?
When you’re on a beach in Southeast Asia, you’re always within reach of fresh fruit juices. Locals blend fruits grown on nearby farms with ice for a refreshing concoction. The instant melding of the ice and the tropical heat creates a unique taste that’s hard to replicate. And nothing enhances a sunset better than mixing those juices with vodka. Bali Water is our tribute to these special moments, conveniently canned!
How does Bali Water give back to Bali?
Bali’s tap water sources are underground aquifers, currently at risk due to increased tourist influx and consumption habits. We have pledged to support the IDEP Foundation in constructing Rainwater Recharge Wells, which replenish the underground water reservoirs and combat seawater contamination. While this is just a part of the solution, these wells have a substantial long-term impact on the looming water issues. Our cans feature a QR code, shaped like a water droplet, which allows users to learn more and even make direct donations.
Who is Bali Water for, where can we get it, and what’s your personal fave way to enjoy?
Bali Water is a salute to adventure seekers, travel enthusiasts, or anyone yearning for a reminder that simplicity in ingredients can craft unique experiences. Canadians can find it across BC, Alberta, and Manitoba – our interactive store locator on the BaliWater.ca website can guide you to the nearest outlet. My personal favourite is to get the cans ice cold and mix Bali Water Coconut Water with Mango to create a cocktail that reminds me of the Mango Sticky Rice dessert I had at a Warung (local restaurant) in Bali. It’s perfect without any added ice!
