’90s Trends I love That Are Back: Brown Lipsticks

September 13, 2023

I grew up in South Florida, and everyone there loved Festival Flea Market. My girlfriends and I would wander up and down those long aisles in our skorts and Keds, sipping on a Fruitopia and shopping for cheap makeup. It’s where I bought my first brown lipstick. It was chocolate-brown with a slight shimmer, and I donned it in all my ’90s teen pics with my flipped bangs and slap bracelets. So, you can imagine my elation when I saw brown lipstick was coming back. In ode of my ’90s brown-stained lips, here are five beautiful brown lipsticks that will take you back to the best generation of all. —Jennifer Cox

MERIT’s Signature Lip Lightweight Lipstick in deep brown or warm neutral ($36, available at Sephora Canada) is a sheer lipstick that has a pretty satin finish. It has all the benefits of a lip balm (papaya fruit extract to soothe, along with raspberry and sunflower seed oils), and doesn’t have the usual heaviness of a traditional lipstick.

The Rondnoir Brown Lipstick from Madeup Beauty ($20, available at Shoppers Drug Mart) comes in this lovely shade and has a moisture-intense, hydrating formula that will actually improve your overall lip condition. The highly pigmented colour is easy to apply thanks to a soft, creamy texture that infuses lips with lasting moisture and fullness. The addition of avocado oil provides comfort and nutrition to lips, which helps to minimize the look of lines.

We love the deep warm brown of MAC Cosmetics’ Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick ($33) because it’s so lightweight. It has sheer and shiny colour and it super long-wearing. It also repairs damaged puckers and promotes good lip health because of raspberry seed and organic extra-virgin olive oils.

Clinique’s Even Better Pop Lip Colour Foundation Lipstick ($30, available at The Bay) comes in 13 lucky brown shades, so you’ll always find the perfect hue for you. This lovely palette of colours is flattering to any skin and undertone, and it’s free of parabens, phthalates, and fragrance. In typical Clinique fashion, it’s just about happy skin!

Give the 1990s a nod with Clinique’s Lasting Finish Lipstick from Rimmel London ($6). It has a smooth, creamy texture that offers ultra comfortable wear. And because it’s formulated for high colour impact, it also lasts up to eight hours.
