3 Ways To Style A Thrifted Men’s Tuxedo Shirt

October 16, 2023

We all know that button up shirts are both a classic and have also become very on trend at the moment. My favourite place to source beautifully long, slightly oversized button-ups is in the men’s section of the thrift shop. On a recent trip to the thrift shop, I came across this fantastic tuxedo shirt. I instantly fell in love with the pin-tuck pleat details, the short stand up collar, and the dramatic long sleeves. Even though it’s still a button-up shirt, these tuxedo details give it way more visual interest. When I started playing around with it, I found there were so many ways to style this piece. It can be worn over dresses, with skirts, with denim and can be appropriate for the office, running errands or a night out. —Jen Pistor

Look 1: For those times when a blazer feels too heavy, a white tuxedo shirt can fill the position. The shirt will still look tailored and chic, but the lighter weight will give you more movement and breathability. Try leaving it unbuttoned and layered over a simple black dress. For interest, use rubber bands or hair ties to keep the cuff up above your elbow. The exaggerated sleeve provides some drama and the collar will stay popped up giving the outfit some structure. Keep the rest of your outfit simple with black, flat slides, a metallic bag and simple hoop earrings.

Look 2: Aren’t we all forever looking for new ways to dress up our denim?  For this denim outfit I leant into simplicity with some embellishment. A classic pair of jeans at an ankle length look polished enough to wear with the tuxedo shirt. Keep the top and bottom buttons undone to look more laid back. To keep the outfit looking modern, go with a chunky, lug sole shoe and a bold earring. If adding a bit of whimsy to your outfits is for you, be sure to check out the little beaded bags at your local thrift shop. I spotted this one with these stunning merlot, moss and gold hues. It feels like jewelry I can carry.

Look 3: Simple drama and an absolute day to night outfit. For day, button the shirt up all the way, cuff the sleeves, and add your favourite tote. For those times you need to go straight from work to your bestie’s birthday dinner, simply unbutton some of the shirt and keep it tucked into a beautiful pair of wide-leg trousers. Uncuff the sleeves and let them be long. Pull out the clutch you popped into your work tote and you are all set for an evening out. The lattice leather ankle boots are a thrift find from a few years ago. The tone on tone of the pants and shoes elongates the legs, while the texture of the shoes adds something unexpected.
