Each year on the first Monday in May, a selective guest list of fashion’s elite, curated by the Queen of fashion herself, Anna Wintour, gathers at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in celebration of the annual Met Gala. Though what goes on inside the gala has managed to remain a mystery to us mere mortals, the red carpet portion is widely covered and some would consider it to be fashion’s Super Bowl. Each year a theme is chosen and attendees are expected to dress the part (though how true guests stay to the theme is often hotly debated on social media platforms the following day).
This year’s theme is set to be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the dress code is “The Garden of Time”, which sounds … up for interpretation? It’s giving “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking”, but in the best way. In anticipation of this year’s Met Gala we’re revisiting the best looks from previous years, plus some dupes so you can get the look as well.
Kendall Jenner single handedly kicked off the no-pants trend in a sparkly tuxedo inspired bodysuit by Marc Jacobs at the 2023 Met Gala, themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”.
For 2022’s theme “Gilded Glamour” Hailey Bieber came draped in white feathers, channelling the iconic Jerry Hall.
A Met Gala vet, Alexa Chung looked elegant in this champagne silk gown from Christian Siriano in 2022. Just as chic, check out this gorgeous silk blouse from Malina for an everyday interpretation of Alexa’s look.
Kaia Gerber’s oversized curly locks were a show stopper in 2022.
Margaret Qualley attended the event in a stunning look from Chanel, reminiscent of the famous fashion house’s bridal look that would close out their runway show, for the 2021 theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.
Also in 2021, Lili Reinhart slayed the house down in this stunning gown from Christian Siriano, featuring each state’s signature flower. Get a similar look with this stunning dress with floral appliques from Saks Fifth Avenue.
Ahead of the times, Hailey Bieber was giving Barbiecore in this pink Alexander Wang gown for the 2019 theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. For the girlies: this pastel pink dress from Oh Polly gives the same vibe.
In 2019 Margaret Qualley wowed in polka dots from designer Giambattista Valli.
Elizabeth Debicki also stunned in 2019 with an oversized pink bow from Salvatore Ferragamo.
Lily Collins channelled Prescila Presley in 2019 for an amazing hair and makeup look.
An absolute classic, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Calvin Klein dress from the 1995 Met Gala “Haut Couture” is still just as chic in 2024.
