In the ever-evolving world of fashion, luxury resale markets have emerged as a beacon of sustainability and affordability amidst incessant price increases in-store. We chatted with Rebecca of Vancouver- based Becca’s Bags to discuss some tips for buying in the resale market given the frequent price increases (from brands like Chanel) and the popularity of fast-fashion brands. —Maddie Clerides
What are the main themes or trends you’ve seen over the last few years in luxury resale?
People are increasingly buying preloved items and prioritizing sustainability. It used to be seen as unconventional, but now it’s mainstream. Individuals are more aware of the environmental effects of their fashion choices and are looking for ways to shop sustainably while staying stylish. This is particularly important considering the economic changes caused by inflation and the post-pandemic market.
What are your tips for those who might be intimidated or nervous to break into buying secondhand?
For individuals who may feel intimidated or nervous about purchasing secondhand luxury items, firstly, it is always a good idea when contemplating a specific item to look it up online. This entails determining whether the price aligns with its condition and any additional inclusions to make sure you get a fair deal.
Additionally, feel free to engage in conversation with the store itself. At BeccasBags we’re more than happy to address any inquiries you may have and are genuinely eager to assist you.
What are some details in a bag that would dissuade you from ultimately purchasing it? Other red flags to look out for?
I would have reservations about purchasing a bag from a store that mislabels its bags details such as leather type or size for example, or will only share details on the bags price privately. Additionally, if a bag is described as being in excellent condition but it clearly is not, it raises doubts about the accuracy of the listing. I start to question what the bag will truly look like upon arrival. Another concern is when a consignor uses someone else’s photos. Have they done their due diligence prior to listing the bag? Have they even seen the bag in person or do they genuinely possess it? Lastly, it is important to consider the store’s Google reviews.
What are some core bags that you would recommend everyone have in their closet?
Here are some essential bags that I would recommend for everyone to have in their closet:
- A classic tote bag such as the Louis Vuitton Neverfull or a Goyard St Louis. These bags are known for their durability and timeless style. They also tend to increase in value over time, making them a sought-after choice.
- The Christian Dior Lady Dior in small is a perfect transitional bag from day to night. It exudes class and timelessness. In fact, its retail price has doubled in the past 10 years, making it a valuable investment.
- The Chanel classic flap in medium is a versatile choice that remains stylish regardless of changing trends. Whether worn doubled up or crossbody, the medium size strikes the perfect balance. Additionally, it consistently increases in value.
- Consider the Chanel coco handle in mini or small for its durability and functionality. This bag can easily accommodate all your essentials and comes with a removable strap, allowing you to wear it from day to night. It also appreciates in value over time.
- For an everyday bag that will stand the test of time, the Hermes Birkin 30 in black, gold, or etoupe is an excellent choice. Unlike its counterparts, the size 25 and 35, the Birkin 30 offers the perfect balance of utility and value. It can be comfortably worn on the crook of your arm and easily transitions from day to night.
Which designer or bag style do you think is the most durable?
If you’re in search of a designer bag that is built to last, Celine bags should definitely be on your radar. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and enduring designs, Celine is a brand that offers durability and longevity.
Another option worth considering is Louis Vuitton’s epi leather and coated canvas leather bags. These materials are known for their ability to withstand wear and tear, making them ideal choices for both travel and everyday use.
Which designers or bag style do you see growing in popularity this year?
It seems that larger handbags are making a big comeback, so now is a great opportunity to get a larger Chanel flap bag or Hermes Birkin, HAC, or Kelly bag at a good price!
