It’s the first Tuesday in May, which means the fashion community is a buzz reflecting on Fashion Girlie Super Bowl. Of course, we’re talking about the most exclusive party of the year, The Met Gala. This year the fashion elite ascended Blair Waldorf’s favourite staircase, adorned with white rose bushes. And though we’ll never know what goes on behind the doors of the top secret gala, we do have the most important info—what everyone wore.
At this point the annual gala’s theme has become as much of a talking point as the actual fashion. Discussions around who understood the assignment, who took it too literally and who decided they were doing their own thing. 2024 was the year of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” with an official dress code set as “The Garden of Time”.
Of course with “garden” in the name, it’s no surprise that many attendees went with a classic look: floral gowns. A popular choice was sheer fabrics like silk and tulle, embellished with delicate floral appliques. Rebecca Hall in Danielle Frankel and Tory Burch looked ethereal in their looks. The event’s co-chair, Anna Wintour arrived in a floor-length floral jacket over a white gown from Loewe.
Elle Fanning’s Balmain dress took structure to a whole new level. Reminiscent of an ice sculpture, her look drew fairytale comparisons to Disney films such as Sleeping Beauty (of course), Snow White and Cinderella, as two birds flew over her shoulders fixing the straps of her frock.
Another unique take on the theme was Tyla’s hourglass inspired dress, also from Balmain, which resembled grains of sand falling as time ticked down, pooling in her train on the floor. Of course we’ll never know whether, or not she was able to sit down for the dinner portion, as she needed to be carried up the steps, along with a few other guests.
