Mary Phillips touched down in Toronto earlier this month for a comprehensive grand masterclass in collaboration with L’Oréal Paris, which included a detailed live recreation of her most viral techniques. During the event, Phillips walked the audience through how to replicate some of her top-trending tutorials- such as how to get Kendall Jenner’s signature look and the art of underpainting. An extended Q&A segment following the masterclass also unveiled that one of Phillips’ most-loved L’Oréal Paris products of all time is the brand’s Voluminous Original Mascara.
The renowned celebrity makeup artist and bonafide tastemaker, whose notable clientele includes Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, and Kendall Jenner (among others), has coined viral makeup techniques- like underpainting- that have since broken the internet. Phillips- who boasts over 2.3 million followers on Instagram- is also booked and busy, having just glammed Jenner for the Met Gala this year. Her go-to for Jenner’s red-carpet-ready look? L’Oréal Paris’ Infallible 24-Hour Fresh Wear Foundation, of course.
Inspiration
When sitting down with the world-famous makeup artist for a quick connect, Phillips spoke (passionately, might I add) about how she loves to take makeup inspiration from mediums such as fashion books and online platforms such as Pinterest. “I get inspiration from all over the place,” claims Phillips. “Back in the day I would go to newsstands- before the internet- and I would buy all of the Italian Vogues and French Vogues.” However, times have changed slightly, in which Phillips now attributes her current inspiration to social media, where she loves scrolling platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to help spark creativity.
Techniques
When it comes to her viral underpainting technique- which refers to applying concealer and contour underneath foundation- Phillips has some essentials from L’Oréal Paris that she recommends using to recreate the look. She loves applying the L’Oréal Paris True Match Concealer to help sculpt the face while the L’Oréal Paris True Match LUMI Glotion makes for the ultimate base.
Trends
Diving into yay or nay makeup trends of the moment, Phillips questioned if I had heard about the viral broccoli freckle trend, which involves applying makeup to the head of a broccoli to create faux freckles on the face. When I mentioned that I had, she laughed, stating, “I never really know what’s going to hit,” in reference to TikTok’s latest quirky beauty fad. Phillips also let me know that she is all about a dewy face. She suggests a combination of the L’Oréal Paris LUMI Glotion and L’Oréal Paris True Match Concealer as the ultimate fresh-face duo. Nonetheless, one thing Phillips isn’t a fan of is making makeup last all day. “To me, I’m very realistic about makeup and that it needs to be touched up,” she cautions. “I don’t want my makeup to last all day. I love doing a little touch-up or refreshing my look.” However, there’s one exception to Phillips’ “no makeup should last all day” rule- and that’s lipstick. “I love the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Resistance Liquid Lipstick,” says Phillips. “I don’t have a lot of color in my lips so I love that it stays all day.”
So, which makeup trends does Phillips anticipate will be making a comeback this summer? There are quite a few, according to the expert! “I think colorful eyes or glittery, sheer colorful shadows will make a comeback,” she starts. “Red lips are something I have been seeing a lot, too.” Phillips also believes that sheer lip oils and “glossy” blush will emerge as prominent makeup trends for summer 2024.
