Here’s The Proper Way To Set A Place For Dinner

June 22, 2024

Setting a proper table involves placing utensils in the correct order and position to ensure an elegant and functional dining experience. Here’s a simple guide to help you set the table correctly:

Basic Table Setting

  1. Plates:
    • Place the dinner plate in the center.
    • If serving a salad or soup, place the salad plate or soup bowl on top of the dinner plate.
  2. Cutlery:
    • Forks:
      • Place forks to the left of the plate.
      • The salad fork (smaller) goes to the outer left, and the dinner fork (larger) goes to the inner left.
    • Knives:
      • Place knives to the right of the plate.
      • The dinner knife (larger) should be closest to the plate with the blade facing inward.
      • If using a butter knife, it should be placed on a bread plate (above the forks), angled on the top right with the blade facing inward.
    • Spoons:
      • Place spoons to the right of the knives.
      • The soup spoon (larger) goes to the outer right if serving soup.
  3. Glassware:
    • Place glassware above the knives.
    • The water glass goes directly above the knife.
    • Wine glasses (if applicable) should be placed to the right and slightly above the water glass.
  4. Napkin:
    • The napkin can be placed to the left of the forks, underneath the forks, or on top of the dinner plate.

Formal Table Setting

  1. Plates:
    • Follow the basic setting, but add a charger plate (a decorative base plate) under the dinner plate.
  2. Cutlery:
    • Forks:
      • Include additional forks for each course (e.g., fish fork if serving fish) placed in the order of use from outside in.
    • Knives:
      • Place knives in order of use from outside in.
      • A fish knife may be added to the right of the dinner knife if serving fish.
    • Spoons:
      • Include a dessert spoon or fork horizontally above the dinner plate.
  3. Glassware:
    • Add glasses for different types of wine in a diagonal line from the water glass (e.g., white wine glass, red wine glass).
    • The water glass remains above the knife, followed by the white wine glass, red wine glass, and champagne flute in a diagonal pattern.
  4. Bread Plate and Butter Knife:
    • Place the bread plate to the top left of the forks with a butter knife laid across it horizontally.
  5. Additional Elements:
    • Place Cards: Positioned above the dessert spoon/fork or directly on the charger plate.
    • Napkin Rings: If using, the napkin with a ring can be placed on the charger plate.
