Los Angeles is more than just a destination for movies, culture and celebrities. One hotel with eccentric character and colour that I recently visited was Mama Shelter. It’s an oasis unseparated from the energy of a vibrant city.
The quirky boutique brand was founded in 2008 by hoteliers Serge Trigano and his sons Jérémie and Benjamin. Their mission was to establish Mama Shelter in exclusive locations that spoke to their hearts and in cool neighbourhoods. You’ve probably been to the locations in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Belgrade, Prague, Toulouse, London, Luxembourg, Roma, Lisboa, Rennes and Dijon.
The hotel, which is also affordable, adds personal touches like writing a welcome note on the mirror with a dash of chalk accompanied by a movie script on the desk – unmistakably, it’s Los Angeles vibe. Just a few blocks from the Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame, this Mama Shelter location is more than convenient. It’s visited by a slew of guests, including artists, entrepreneurs, DJs etc.
One of my favourite features is the rooftop bar and restaurant that’s always popping with live music and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign. The food and cocktails is hands down one of the best I’ve had in the city. My fave cocktails that are totally Instagram-worthy are the Mamcita (cucumber & grapefruit infused gin, elderflower, grapefruit juice, lime juice, jalapeno) and Bermuda Triangle (diplomatico planas rum, dark rum, select aperitivo, montenegro amaro, luxardo liqueur, fresh lemon juice, orange juice). Their must-try food options are the Sweet & Spicy Shrimps, Nashville Hot Chicken Bao and the Le Royal Burger.
If you visit the ever-moving, ever-thriving city of Los Angeles, make sure to stay or dine (or both) at Mama Shelter. I guarantee you, it’ll be the highlight of your trip.
