When attending a yoga studio or class, it’s important to follow proper etiquette to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience for everyone. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Before the Class
- Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the class starts to find a spot, set up your mat, and get settled.
- Turn Off Your Phone: Make sure your phone is turned off or on silent to avoid disruptions during the class.
- Personal Hygiene: Ensure you are clean and free of strong scents (including perfumes and body odor) as yoga often involves close proximity to others.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and won’t cause distractions.
- Inform the Instructor: If you have any injuries or conditions, let the instructor know before the class begins so they can offer modifications.
During the Class
- Respect Personal Space: Place your mat with enough space around it to avoid encroaching on others’ personal space. Try to ensure people behind you can see themselves in the mirror, if there is one.
- Stay Quiet: Keep conversations to a minimum and avoid talking during the class to maintain a focused and peaceful environment.
- Follow the Instructor: Listen carefully to the instructor’s cues and try to follow along. If you need a break, take a resting pose quietly.
- Avoid Strong Scents: Refrain from using strong perfumes or oils that may affect others.
- Use Props Considerately: If props are available, use them appropriately and put them back neatly after the class.
- Stick to Your Mat. Your postures should be contained within the area of your mat. As should your sweat. Do not fling your limbs (and sweat) around.
After the Class
- Clean Up: Wipe down your mat and any equipment you’ve used. Leave the space as you found it.
- Express Gratitude: Thank the instructor and, if appropriate, fellow practitioners for the shared practice.
- Exit Quietly: Leave the studio quietly, respecting those who may still be meditating or enjoying a moment of peace.
Additional Tips
- Hydrate Before: Drink water before the class but avoid consuming large amounts right before as it may cause discomfort during practice.
- Stay for the Entire Class: Try to stay for the entire duration, including the final relaxation pose (Savasana), to fully benefit from the practice. If you need to leave, wait until between postures, not while people are balancing. Same thing when you come back in.
- Respect Studio Rules: Each studio may have specific rules or guidelines, so make sure to familiarize yourself with them and follow accordingly.
By adhering to these guidelines, you’ll contribute to a positive and harmonious environment in your yoga class, enhancing the experience for yourself and others.
