Love home scents? We recently “sniffed out” Vancouver-founded Aromatech, which makes a chic and well-designed, technology-advanced diffuser that distributes fragrances using nebulized air rather than traditional heat or water and is Bluetooth enabled. Founded in 2009, Aromatech’s signature line of fragrances are created at perfume quality inspired by luxury scents currently on market and use 100 per cent pure essential oils free from parabens, sulfates and other harmful additives (which means they are safe for children and pets!). Plus, the brand recently released two new diffusers, the Ambience, and Aromadream, as well as new scents including Ever After, Love Story and their new tea collection consisting of Tea Garden, Matcha Moment and White Tea & Iris. We chatted with Heather Lutz, brand manager and olfactory expert at Aromatech, to learn more. —Vita Daily
AromaTech has been dedicated to fragrance innovation since 2009. Can you share some insights into the journey of AromaTech and how the company has evolved over the years?
We have evolved steadily into a home scenting company inspired by and using similar quality to the fine fragrance world. Our owner switched gears away from ‘normal’ and inexpensive home scent solutions years ago. Our loyal customers can readily tell the difference. I have never smelled another home scenting company that can capture elegant and fine notes as we do. We have also evolved from one-note scents to enhance our scent selection. We carefully look at up-and-coming fine fragrance trends and integrate them into our beautiful library of scents. For example, we have capitalized on vanilla trends with the multifaceted Vanilla Collection, and solar scents are perfectly captured in The Beach House.
The new diffusers, Ambience and Aromadream, along with the new scents, are exciting additions to your product line. What was the inspiration behind these new releases?
The Ambience diffuser was born out of our love for home decor and marrying it with scents. We knew there was no cold-air diffuser with a ceramic casing on the market, so that was where we started. We also wanted some interesting ceramic colors and loved the Charcoal and Terracotta Blush for that reason. The Aroma Dream was developed as the cutest cold-air diffuser, giving customers with smaller areas a place to start. Both of these new diffusers welcome a new and exciting customer into our realm.
The new tea scents were incredible to work on. Some of our best-selling scents were tea-inspired, and we wanted a collection that made tea scents more modern and luxurious.
Your fragrances are created at perfume quality using 100% pure essential oils and are free from harmful additives. Can you elaborate on the importance of using safe and sustainable ingredients in your products?
We go above and beyond any air care regulations and certifications to ensure we use only the finest, purest ingredients in our oils. We have some sensitive coworkers, so it was very important that these scents not give people headaches or reactions. We have these scents diffusing at home and around our families, so we would never want cheap fillers and additives in them like parabens and phthalates. We also knew it was important to maintain a vegan brand with no animal derivatives at all.
Nebulizing technology is a key feature of AromaTech’s diffusers. How does this technology enhance the fragrance experience compared to traditional methods like heat or water diffusion?
Cold air diffusion is absolutely next level. It’s a dream to operate, and you get such a wonderful scent from cold air diffusion. Because the particles of oil are pushed out into nanoparticles, the scent molecules are super tiny and float through the room, covering a larger space. You get a true, multifaceted scent experience, like with your own favorite fine fragrance. Also, with cold-air diffusion, you use 99% of the oil, whereas with water diffusion, you only get about 5% of the oils. When you mix the oil in an ultrasonic diffuser, those particles are attached to large water molecules, which makes them larger and heavier, so they drop out of the air very quickly. It’s a waste of oil and only scents a very small area for a short amount of time.
The new tea collection scents, such as Tea Garden, Matcha Moment, and White Tea & Iris, are quite unique. What was the creative process behind developing these particular fragrances?
These are three of my favorite scents I have ever worked on. As we already have white tea scents in our best-selling scents, I knew our customers already loved tea-based scents. I wanted to make them more modern and luxurious, so I combined fig and matcha tea latte together for Matcha Moment. Tea Garden is inspired by a trip to a stunning tea house where we had oolong and osmanthus tea. The scent was incredible and relaxing. White Tea & Iris was so special as we did not previously have an elevated iris-based scent. I know our white tea customers love the elegance and sophisticated scent already, so adding light and stunning iris notes was perfect. Many of the world’s best-selling fine and niche fragrances feature beautiful iris notes. These scents were created out of a love of the relaxing and elegant nature of the perfect cup of tea.
AromaTech emphasizes creating fragrances inspired by luxury scents. How do you stay ahead of trends in the fragrance industry and ensure your products remain innovative and appealing?
I am constantly researching fine and niche fragrance trends. I eat, sleep, and breathe them. I love Byrdie, Vogue, and Who What Wear for their take on scent trends. There are so many great fragrance influencers as well; I look to see what is popular on TikTok all the time. I also do scent treks to New York and LA to experience many scents firsthand and learn and talk to others about best-selling and big trends. It’s a wonderful thing to research! I am also lucky to work with the world’s finest fragrance houses in developing these scents. They have a wealth of knowledge and truly support my drive to elevate home fragrance to another realm.
As an olfactory expert, what are some of the challenges you face in creating and managing a diverse range of fragrances, and how do you overcome them to maintain the high quality AromaTech is known for?
Oh, I always want to launch 20 scents at once, and I am constantly holding back and only launching the best of the best. I evaluate and evaluate and have a wonderful community of people that I test the scents with, who give me their thoughts about the scents. Only the best scents survive the rounds of evaluation. I really have to be objective as well; just because I could have over 50 vanilla scents does not mean that is what the line requires. It’s a constant balance. I also have very rigorous scent criteria for them to be approved. Regardless of the rounds of evaluation, each scent must have our AromaTech DNA, which is depth, nuance, and ambience. I want the scents to always feel luxurious, mood-boosting, and transportive. I also do not compromise on quality; I will not accept a flat, overly sweet, or boring scent. I know our customers want exquisite scent experiences, and I test hundreds of scents to get there.
Even at the end of a scent-filled, busy day, I love coming home and immediately reaching for my Ambience diffuser with one of the tea scents to center and ground me. Working on this scent portfolio is just a wonderful feeling; I never get tired of it.
