Keep Your Flowers Fresh In The Summer Heat: Expert Tips From Athiana Acres Florist

August 12, 2024

As the summer heat intensifies, keeping fresh-cut flowers alive indoors can be a challenge. Kalen Meaden, Head Florist at Athiana Acres, shares practical tips to keep your flowers looking vibrant and beautiful even on the hottest days.

One of the main culprits behind the quick demise of fresh-cut flowers is bacteria in the water, which can enter the flower stems and cause them to decay quickly. This issue is worsened in the summer, as heat promotes faster bacterial growth. Additionally, high temperatures cause flowers to lose moisture more quickly. To combat these issues, it’s essential to keep your flowers well-hydrated and follow proper care techniques.

Here are some tried-and-true tips to keep your flowers fresh this summer:

  1. Daily Stem Trimming: Cut each flower stem daily to allow moisture to flow back into the stems. A small snip, around 2mm, will do the trick.
  2. Refresh Vase Water: Change the water in your vase with fresh cold water every day. Pro tip: If you’re changing the water daily, flower food isn’t necessary.
  3. Cool Storage: If possible, refrigerate your flowers overnight. Alternatively, place them in a cooler area within your home, such as the garage, patio or basement.
  4. Regular Misting: Mist your bouquet twice a day with fresh cold water to keep them hydrated and fresh.
  5. Remove Wilting Stems: Pull out individual stems as they die. You can also replace them with new stems to refresh your bouquet.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the beauty of fresh-cut flowers all summer long.
