Move over temp tattoos, hair wraps and nail piercings … tooth gems are the latest way to embellish your body. We chatted with Melissa Nguyen of Vancouver’s Icy Customs to learn all about this sparkling trend! —Vita Daily
What inspired you to start Icy Customs, and how did you identify the demand for tooth gems in Vancouver?
The inspiration for starting Icy Customs came from a passion for unique and personalized fashion statements. Initially, I began my brand by customizing sneakers, which gave me insight into the growing demand for individualized style. Noticing the increasing interest in unique dental accessories, I saw an opportunity to bring high-quality tooth gems to Vancouver. The demand was evident from social media trends and local inquiries, indicating a gap in the market for this kind of customization.
Can you walk us through the process of applying a tooth gem, and how do you ensure it is safe and comfortable for your clients?
The process begins with a consultation to choose the perfect gem and placement. I then clean and dry the tooth surface to ensure proper adhesion. Next, a primer is applied to enhance the bond. A safe, dental-grade adhesive is used to apply the gem, which is then cured with a special light to ensure it bonds securely. I prioritize safety by using non-invasive techniques and high-quality materials, ensuring the gem is comfortable and doesn’t interfere with normal dental hygiene.
How do you source your materials for tooth gems, and what steps do you take to ensure they are high quality and durable?
I source my tooth gems from reputable suppliers who specialize in dental accessories. Specifically, I use lead-free Swarovski Crystals and 18/22 karat gold charms to ensure the highest quality and safety for my clients. Each gem is carefully selected for its durability and aesthetic appeal. I also ensure that all materials meet dental safety standards. Regular quality checks and feedback from my clients help me maintain high standards and continuously improve my offerings.
What trends have you noticed in the tooth gem industry, and how do you keep your designs fresh and appealing to your clients?
I’ve noticed a trend towards more personalized and intricate designs, with clients often opting for multiple gems. To keep our designs fresh, I stay updated with global fashion trends and regularly introduce new styles and colors. I also collaborate with artists and influencers to bring unique, trendy designs to my clients.
What advice would you give to someone interested in getting their first tooth gem, and how can they best care for it to ensure longevity?
For someone getting their first tooth gem, I’d advise starting with a simple design to see how they like it. It’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene, avoiding hard or sticky foods that could detach the gem. Following my aftercare instructions is also important to ensure the gem stays in place and continues to look its best. Regular dental checkups are recommended to ensure everything remains in good condition.
Beyond tooth gems, in what other unique ways do you see people embellishing their bodies, now and in the near future?
Beyond tooth gems, body embellishments are becoming more diverse, including customized nail art, permanent body jewelry, and temporary tattoos. At Icy Customs, I’m currently learning how to create custom grillz, which I believe are another unique fashion statement that complements tooth gems. In the near future, I expect to see even more creative and personalized ways for people to express themselves through body art and accessories, as this field continues to evolve and expand.
