What’s In My Makeup Bag? 8 Essentials I Can’t Leave The House Without

August 30, 2024

As a fashion and beauty writer, a major part of my job is testing and trying out new products. So, naturally, I’ve found some holy grails along the way. And let me tell you—when a product stands out from the rest, it’s a big deal. From flawless foundations to juicy lip balms, I keep one of everything I use on a daily basis in my makeup bag at all times. As much as I love trying new products, on days when I need to trust my makeup will look good, there is a handful (or face full?) of essentials I turn to (and won’t leave the house without).

These products live in my makeup bag. —Bailey Grant

E.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer

A primer I always turn back to is E.l.f.’s Poreless Putty Primer. I struggle with larger pores, and this primer just makes them look nearly invisible. Plus, it provides an ultra-smooth base for the rest of my makeup. ($13)

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation

Listen – I know this is quite the spendy foundation. But it’s truly the best foundation I have ever tried (so far). Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation provides flawless coverage while somehow maintaining to feel weightless. It’s also true that it lasts all day. ($70.50)

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Some products are uber-popular for a reason. One of those products happens to be Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer. What can I say? It performs well, hiding any blemish I place it on. ($43)

Nudestix Stax All Over Color Blush Balm

This product is relatively new to me; however, ever since I got my hands on it, it’s been in my daily rotation. The Nudestix Stax All Over Color Blush Balm is amazing for carrying on the go, as it can be used all over the face (blush, lips, and eyes – oh my!). From blush top-ups to lip touch-ups, this product can do it all, and with ease. I’ve personally been grabbing the shade ‘Barely Nude’ the most. ($30)

E.l.f. Perfect Finish HD Setting Powder

As of late, I haven’t been much of a setting powder girl. But I do like to use a little of E.l.f.’s Perfect Finish HD Setting Powder towards the centre of my face and under my eyes. I’ll keep it in my makeup bag just in case I’m looking a little too dewy (oily) for my liking throughout the day. ($8)

Essence Soft & Precise Lip Pencil

Every time I use the Soft & Precise Lip Pencil from Essence (nearly every day), I can’t believe that it’s so affordable. It glides on effortlessly and never looks overly dry like some liners can. It works as a perfect base under gloss! ($3.49)

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

Above, when I mentioned gloss, what I really meant was Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter Balm. I truly enjoy reapplying this product throughout the day. It feels buttery soft, and it leaves my lips looking hydrated and glossy. What’s not to love? ($32.50)

Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara

In the past, every time I ran out of mascara, I would go on the hunt for a new one that I’d never tried, as none ever really left me feeling completely satisfied. That is until Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Mascara entered my makeup stash. It works better for me than any high-end mascara I’ve tried as of yet. It provides length, volume, and it stays in place all day. ($13.96)
