The Mom Flow: The Moment I Learned I Was The Problem

September 1, 2024

Welcome to The Mom Flow, where I share things that are on my mind in the hopes of helping you connect to your Mom Flow. Thanks for being here! —Erin Sousa

Modeling behaviours

Something interesting happened the other day. Lola had a bit of a rough patch (which I’m sure I shared about on social and here, too) – lots of being defiant, meltdowns etc. A tad bit overly sassy. I would ask her to do something, for instance, “please don’t run up the stairs”, to which she would respond “I KNOW”. I would correct her time after time, saying, “let’s say ‘yes mom’ instead”. One day, Roberto asked me to do something, to which I responded “I KNOW”. Well, sobering. It made me realize how much I influence Lola’s ways, and gave me a swift kick in the pants to watch how I’m modeling behaviours. Annnnd she also asked me what damn it means today, soooo it’s a process.

Mom flow hacks

There are so many weeks that I feel like I’m just balancing plates, and definitely dropping a few. I got this comment in my DM’s and it got me thinking!

My time management isn’t always the best, and I’ve learned that I’m a biiig procrastinator. I can put off paying a bill or look at a mess 10x before cleaning it. But what I am good at is a productivity hack or two. Like using something like Instacart to just use my time more wisely – choosing to spend a few bucks for convenience so I can do other things can honestly be game changing. (I’ve heard people say trading money for time but I always think about those who don’t get to do it that way, so it gives me pause). This week, Roberto gave me a list of things we needed (I’m the errand runner, the one who organizes our lives, so that’s my gig), and I just didn’t have the time to go to Costco – it can take a good 1.5 hrs out of my day, plus all the lugging! I skipped the Costco run, and ordered it instead, opting to fill that time with a walk and work. And the coolest thing is that it showed up just as I came home from my walk – felt like I won. Defo had a ‘in my Mom Flow moment’. They shared this code with me to give you $10 off your first order (not sponsored at all, just thought it could be useful!): ESOUSA16415A

Fun at the fair

I have to say that my absolute fave part of being a mom is seeing your child experience life… to enjoy something new and fun! I remember hearing people say this, but I never understood it until having a kiddo myself. And the fact that truly my fun is seeing her have fun! How is this?! Kinda blows my mind sometimes. We took her to the PNE for the first time (it’s our local summer fair) and she is such a daredevil, she was up for all of it. She’s a Cancer but gives major Leo vibes. I invited my friend and her daughter to come with us, which was perfect so she could have a ride buddy and they were living their best lives (as you can see with faces full of ice cream above). My other hack for you is to bring a dad to stand in the lines with them so you can catch up with your girlfriend on a bench!

Solo movie date

I’m not the biggest reader, but I did read It Ends With Us, so I was excited that it was being made into a movie. Regardless of the drama around it, it’s on my list to watch, and I decided I am planning a solo date night after Lola is in bed to take myself to the VIP Theaters. Just me, layered buttered popcorn and a reclining chair. It seems so hard to fit in, but just the thought of it gets me excited! I grew up going to matinees with my mom, it was totally our thing, and I used to looove taking myself to the movies alone before Lola. I miss that a lot, so why can’t I still make it happen, right?!
