Searching For Ways To Reduce Food Waste + Save Money? Try This (Win!)

September 5, 2024

Did you know that 77% of Canadians are concerned about reducing food waste in their households? With rising grocery costs and environmental worries on the minds of many, it’s no surprise that Canadians are looking for ways to make their food last longer and stretch their budgets further. Enter FoodSaver, the brand behind the leading vacuum sealing system, which is making it easier than ever to keep food fresh and minimize waste.

The Food Waste Challenge

Despite our best efforts, Canadians still waste a shocking amount of food every year. The average household tosses out over 300 pounds of food annually, costing more than $1,300! According to The National Zero Waste Council, nearly half of that waste is fruits and vegetables—foods that could stay fresher much longer with the right preservation techniques.

Jenny Leach, General Manager of Newell Brands Canada, explains, “It’s easy to forget about the food we don’t eat, but throwing it away not only wastes money but also has environmental impacts. Our research shows that Canadians want to reduce food waste, both for their wallets and for the planet.”

Canadians Are Taking Action

Many Canadians are already making strides to cut down on waste. The FoodSaver survey found that 49% of respondents are trying to cook just what their household needs for each meal, while 43% are actively searching for better food storage solutions. The desire to be eco-friendly is also strong, with 66% of Canadians agreeing it’s important to use reusable or environmentally friendly kitchen products.

In addition, over half of the respondents (55%) are buying groceries in bulk to save money, thanks to inflation, and 44% are worried about supply chain issues affecting their access to groceries. This is where FoodSaver comes in handy, offering a practical solution to keep food fresher for longer, no matter how much you buy.

The Magic of Vacuum Sealing

So, how does vacuum sealing help reduce food waste? It’s all about creating an airtight seal that keeps oxygen out, which in turn prevents freezer burn and slows down the growth of bacteria. This simple process can extend the shelf life of everything from meats and veggies to snacks and pantry staples.

For those who already own a vacuum sealer, the benefits are clear. A whopping 65% of owners say they’re now buying more groceries in bulk, knowing they can use their FoodSaver system to keep food fresh. Plus, 28% of owners are prepping meals in advance more often, thanks to the convenience of vacuum sealing.

Top Tips to Reduce Food Waste with FoodSaver

  • Vacuum Seal for Long-Term Freshness: FoodSaver systems can keep food fresh up to five times longer.
  • Label and Date Everything: Use a marker to label vacuum-sealed bags with the contents and date to ensure you use older items first.
  • Buy and Cook in Bulk: Take advantage of bulk buying and prepare large batches of meals, then vacuum seal them to enjoy later.
  • Organize Your Fridge and Freezer: Store items like dairy and meats on the lower shelves where it’s coldest. Use vacuum-sealed bags to save space and keep everything neat.

Reducing food waste is easier than you think, and with FoodSaver, you can enjoy fresher food, save money, and do your part for the environment—all with a simple vacuum seal! —Vita Daily
