A Style Icon’s Refined Comeback In 2024: What To Expect From The Alexa Chung X Madewell Collection

September 8, 2024

“Some things never go out of style. One of those things is Alexa Chung.”

A true sentiment. As well as the tagline for Madewell’s latest collaboration with former fashion it girl, Alexa Chung.

It has been 14 years since Chung last collaborated with the all American fashion retailer. Then Chung was known for her Pinterest-worthy street style outfits, her love of vintage and her quick, but dry sense of British humor. Her style then could be summarized by an eclectic mix of twee and indie sleaze aesthetics. She often mixed designer items with unique vintage pieces and high street finds, making her signature style approachable and easily replicable to her many followers.

Fourteen years later Alexa remains a style icon. However our 2010s it girl is growing up. While her first Madewell collaboration consisted largely of leopard print booties, peter pan collars, babydoll dresses and leather hot pants. Her former Tumblr aesthetic has been traded in for a more refined look that includes tailored button downs, expensive suede jackets and figure-flattering denim.

The collection appears to be received with mixed reviews. While some are excited for a second Madewell collaboration with Alexa, others feel the collection fell flat. Compared to Alexa’s personal style, which is charming and eclectic, the collection is rather basic. The first drop of 14 pieces is composed mostly of denim and smart button downs – classically Madewell, but lacking in the quintessential Alexa Chung flare.  Two pieces which stand out are a suede trench and suede double breasted blazer, both of which capture Chung’s love of vintage fashion and seventies influence in her own wardrobe.

The largest complaint from customers is in regards to the size inclusivity of the range, or rather lack thereof. Despite Madewell having preached body positivity and inclusivity, the collection has a fairly small range of sizes from XS – XL, 00 – 16 and 23 – 33 for jeans.

There will be a second drop with ten more pieces, which may prove to quell some of the concerns brought about from the first drop.
