11 Steps (+ Products) To Switch Your Skin Routine To Cooler Weather

September 21, 2024

As the weather cools and the air turns crisp, it’s time to rethink your skincare routine. The drop in temperature and humidity can leave your skin dry and dull. Transitioning to richer, more nourishing products will keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout the season. Here are our tips to keep your complexion radiant all autumn, plus some skincare picks. —Vicki Duong

Switch to a creamier cleanser. Swap your foaming or gel cleanser for a creamy one to maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and prevent dryness. Try the SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser ($56), formulated with soothing ingredients like allantoin and orange oil to effectively remove impurities without stripping essential moisture.

Incorporate a richer moisturizer. With less humidity, your skin craves extra hydration. Opt for a thicker moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or shea butter to lock in moisture. The Rhode Skin Barrier Restore Cream ($30), packed with shea butter, squalane, and peptides, provides deep hydration while supporting the skin’s natural barrier.

Keep using SPF. Even though it’s cooler and cloudier, UV rays are still present. Apply sunscreen daily to protect against sun damage. The Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF 50+ Luminising Serum ($56.50) provides high broad-spectrum protection while leaving a radiant, dewy finish.

Add a hydrating serum. Layer a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid before your moisturizer to boost hydration and keep skin plump. Try Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum ($68), which combines the hydrating power of hyaluronic acid with strawberry and rhubarb extracts for soft, radiant skin.

Use an overnight mask. Incorporate an overnight mask into your routine once or twice a week to repair and hydrate skin while you sleep. The Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask ($66), with ceramides, vitamins, and antioxidants, soothes and hydrates tired skin for an extra moisture boost.

Exfoliate gently. Exfoliation is crucial year-round, but opt for gentler formulas in the fall to avoid irritation. The Skin Frequency Enlighten ($50) serum, infused with AHAs and fruit enzymes, gently exfoliates and brightens the complexion.

Incorporate facial oils. Facial oils provide an extra layer of moisture and lock in hydration. Choose non-comedogenic options like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip. The LOA Botanical Recovery Serum ($60) is packed with jojoba, rosehip, and evening primrose oils to soothe and restore your skin’s natural glow.

Invest in a humidifier. Indoor heating can sap moisture from the air, leaving your skin dry. Combat this with a humidifier. The Honeywell InSight Series Air Purifier ($210) filters out allergens and maintains optimal humidity levels for healthier skin and a more comfortable living space.

Introduce retinol gradually. Autumn is the perfect time to add retinol to your routine due to reduced sun exposure. Start slowly, using it once or twice a week. The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum ($55) features a 3.5% retinoid complex that targets wrinkles, texture, and uneven skin tone.

Focus on lip care. Cooler weather can lead to dryness and chapping, so switch to a thicker, more nourishing lip balm. The Brahmi Skincare Divine Rose Lip Plumping Balm ($68) is packed with rose oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil to soothe and hydrate.

Don’t forget eye care. The delicate skin around your eyes needs extra attention in cooler weather. The Veriphy Skincare 20/20 Eye Cream ($98), with phytoglycogen, peptides, and niacinamide, boosts hydration, reduces dark circles, and improves skin texture.
