First Impressions: Rare Beauty’s New Pressed Finishing Power

October 1, 2024

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty Pressed Finishing Powder is the latest beauty must-try to hit the market.

But, is it worth the buzz?

Available in 14 shades, the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez True To Myself Pressed Talc-Free Finishing Powder (available at Rarebeauty.com and Sephora) is said to blur, smooth, and set makeup to perfection. Offering a formula with buildable tinted coverage, this lightweight product also aims to reduce shine.

Following this list of incredible claims, I was excited to put it to the test.

I have combination skin, which means I have an oily T-Zone but other areas of my face tend to be on the drier side (such as my cheeks). In order to test the true longevity of the product, I decided to use it as a finishing powder, in which I applied it all over my face with a brush to set my look. I used shade Porcelain, which is described as being light with a neutral undertone.

Upon first impressions, I noticed the powder was not chalky at all. Instead, it felt silky smooth. When I applied it with a brush to the T-Zone of my face, I also made note of the fact that it didn’t look or feel cakey. The product indeed felt lightweight, and it added a light layer of coverage to my look, which is exactly what I wanted.

I also loved how the product looked and felt when applied with a powder puff under my eyes, on top of my concealer. I used the puff to gather some of the product and applied a light layer under the eyes for a blurring, seamless, and slightly brightening effect. Throughout the day, I was impressed to see that the product was long-wearing. It didn’t clog my pores (which I have quite a few of on my nose) or crease, especially around areas where I had first applied a base.

Overall, this product definitely lives up to the hype of being a new makeup must-try. When opting to use the product as a finishing powder, I achieved boosted coverage that ensured a long-wearing look. I also achieved shine control benefits, so I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a lightweight powder that does the job and does it well. It’s also great for setting concealer underneath the eyes. The component itself is extremely travel friendly making it perfect for on-the-go touch-ups if needed throughout the day or night.

This is a great addition to any makeup bag because it can be used alone if you prefer a powder base, or on top of any makeup look, making this the ideal flexible product for a super customized application, everytime. —Samantha Vecchiarelli
