Penfolds is celebrating 180 years of winemaking. Since 1844 this Australian brand has maintained its quality, high standards and is respected globally by wine critics and consumers alike. Peter Gago, Penfolds chief winemaker, joined the team in 1989 and is Penfolds’ red wine oenologist. He also joined Decanter’s prestigious Hall of Fame in 2021, and is highly acclaimed as a global expert in his field. Here are his picks for autumnal reds from Penfolds that we can certainly sip now, or cellar to age beautifully in the coming years. —Catherine Dunwoody
Bin 28 2019 perfectly captures the warm climate Australian shiraz demands in this multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always at the forefront.
Bin 128 2021 is made from grapes sourced from the terra rossa red clay over limestone soils of Coonawarra, a region that produces cool-climate red table wines. This shiraz is medium-bodied, aromatic, with savoury notes and smooth tannins.
Bin 389 2019 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, because some of the wine is matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange, Penfolds prestige portfolio. The perfect balance of fruit and oak with a mid-palate that the brand is known for, Peter Gago says, “This is a perennial overachiever in any vintage.”
Bin 407 2021 was developed due to the availability of high-quality cabernet sauvignon grapes. A classic, this wine illustrates Penfolds multi-regional blending philosophy.
