Aimee Miedema’s path to becoming a tarot reader is as unique as it is inspiring. With a background in nursing and music, Aimee has always been drawn to helping others. Now, through her intuitive tarot readings, she guides clients toward self-reflection and inner wisdom. In this Q&A, Aimee shares how her life experiences have shaped her approach to tarot and the misconceptions she helps to dispel. (Oh, and catch her at Maan Farms doing readings this weekend!) —Vita Daily
You’ve had a unique journey from nursing and music to tarot reading. How did these experiences shape your approach to intuitive readings and connecting with your clients?
My past careers and tarot have the common thread of wanting to help people. Whether it be aiding those in the hospital, connecting and moving people through music or giving a card reading that helps them gain clarity. It all stems from my desire to make the world a better place. Even if it’s just one person at a time. I remember being impacted by movies like “Crash” or “Pay it forward” when I was younger and realized how connected we all are and that the smallest act can have an immense ripple effect. I try to remind myself of that daily.
Tarot is something I picked up in my teens and really fell in love with the art of it. I’m always looking for meaning in all things and being born on Halloween this type of thing was totally up my alley. However the more I explored it and discovered its history, it became more than just a fun little thing. It really dives into the psyche of people and is an incredible tool for self reflection. As I started doing readings for others it really awakened something in me and gave me permission to trust my intuition. Often, confirming that niggling feeling within.
You mention that you’ve always felt a connection to the “unknown” from a young age. Can you share a specific moment or experience when you realized your intuition was guiding you?
I’ve always had “feelings”, I think we all do to some extent, some more connected than others. I think as a child I was clairaudient, hearing things like footsteps, giggles and voices where it didn’t make sense. I remember telling my Grandma about a voice I spoke to once, I distinctly remember it was a male voice. She was a very religious lady and was concerned, and told me to ask it to leave “in the name of the lord”. I never heard the voices from there on and I think buried that sense away. However, diving into tarot when I was a teenager, helped me connect to the “unknown” in a different way. Now I see that connection as an inner knowing and trust my intuition.
What are some common misconceptions about tarot readings that you often encounter, and how do you address them with your clients?
I think movies and media have distorted what tarot and card readings are. Everyone has their own practices and beliefs with the cards, but I like to tell my clients that the cards aren’t a crystal ball giving you the next lottery numbers, rather a tool for self reflection and connecting you to your intuition and spirit (however that looks in their own beliefs) and I’m there to provide the messages the Universe wants them to know here and now. Also one of the biggest misconceptions is that they are scary and evil. The standard Rider-Waite Tarot deck actually has a lot of Christian/Abrahamic religion symbolism in it. No matter your belief the cards can provide introspection and allow you to have a closer connection and find meaning to whatever it is you believe in.
Tarot isn’t just a tool for self-reflection but connects to deeper intuitive practices like psychic readings. Many seek assurance and clarity, much like the offerings of psychic readings that provide guidance similar to Aimee’s dedication in facilitating connection to one’s inner wisdom.
In your readings, you emphasize helping people connect with their inner wisdom. How do you guide someone who feels disconnected from their intuition or unsure of how to interpret the signs they receive?
I think the cards do the work there. There may be meaning that even I may not highlight, but means something significant to them. It’s there that they are tapping into their own feelings. I believe everyone has inner wisdom. They just need to pause, listen, and look within. In my readings, we work together to understand what the messages could mean for them. It’s more their truth that shines through, I’m just there to hold the mirror so they can see it.
Creating a safe and confidential space is a key part of your work. How do you ensure that clients feel comfortable and supported during a tarot reading, especially if it’s their first time?
Being someone who has worked with the public for a long time, I think I have a very welcoming presence. Any reading with me is always confidential and clients can share as little or as much as feels comfortable to them. I also offer private readings via zoom that they can do with me in the comfort of their own space. My readings are for anyone, no matter what faith, gender or identity. Come as you are.
