“I’m going to be cold in Toronto.” This thought blasted with flurries between the plane and airport connector. I was across the country to pick up my new apartment keys, transporting, from Vancouver, a carry-on of precious crop tops and miniskirts. “How will you stay warm?” My west coast family worries as I meet them for iced coffee in a thin trench and canvas shoes. I’ve been protected by my locale’s late spring-like winters over the last decade. On the night before New Years’, boarding a one-way flight to my colder life, I hope to bring the warmth of everyone I’ll miss: knit, crocheted, puffy and strong. —Julia Dumbrell
Parka from The North Face
The North Face X SKIMS Limited-Edition Collaboration dropped and sold out in record time. Unless Santa got the hint quickly enough to covet the archival styles, innovative fit and signature color palette, I’d be just as happy in The North Face Women’s Explore Farther Parka ($300).
Boots from Olang
The trend-forward design, superior comfort and protection of Olang’s Calixa Boots is just what my unphased toes need ($270). This season, Olang introduced new soles designed for exceptional grip in all conditions, built for new adventures like a cross-country move.
Gloves from gravitypope
While we’re on the topic of extremities, the gravitypope 5475 Mitten in black/leo offers the wool blend my fingers yearn for ($135). The tonal stitching and faux fur trimmed cuff on these mittens will forever remind me of my move in winter ‘24, when leopard print ran rampant in fashion.
Scarf from GANNI
In shades of grey, black, red and beige, GANNI’s Grey Striped Soft Wool Scarf is made to last for seasons to come of fashion trends and cold weather ($225). Maybe Santa will bring the matching balaclava too, if I was extra nice.
Tights from Sheertex
This is the year I find out what the Classic Sheer Tights from Sheertex are all about ($49). Under my signature miniskirts, dress pants, jeans and even sweats, receiving this second skin would be like a hug from home, enabling me to get away with the warmer weather clothes I like to style year-round.
