Antique diamonds are one of the world’s rarest gems, beloved for their unique character and fire achieved through old world aristian cutting techniques. These vintage stones have become attraction of engagement rings because they are so bespoke and have a storied history about them. In the recent flurry of celebrity engagements, there’s one star whose spectacular lab grown engagement ring is a piece which emulates the heirloom vibe of old-world portrait cut stones: Paris Jackson.
In early December, the 26-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson confirmed her engagement on Instagram to her boyfriend of two years, music producer Justin Long. Long proposed to Jackson with a massive lab diamond engagement ring which she reportedly had a hand in designing with Los Angeles-based lab diamond design specialist Jean Dousset (fun fact: he’s the great-great-grandson of Louis Cartier).
A lab grown diamond was a perfect choice for Jackson as sustainability is one of her key values. The rectangular portrait cut centre stone was a unique choice, one that makes this ring truly one-of-a-kind. Jackson’s ultra-thin flat cut diamond has an understated dazzled about it. Portrait cuts give diamonds a transparent glass-like finish, making the stone appear completely transparent with a just a hint of light-catching sparkle along the outer edges. Portrait cut stones are one of the oldest forms of diamond cutting which originated in ancient India where diamonds were chosen for their strength and clarity to encase precious miniature paintings.
The sleekness of this diamond cut makes it feel incredibly modern today. Jackson’s ring looks elegant and elongating on her finger. Her diamond is is set on a micro-pave band, which Long revealed is another special part of the ring as it contains hidden diamonds and details referencing the number seven, a significant figure to his bride-to-be.
If you want an engagement ring that’s truly unique in 2025, a portrait cut diamond might just be your perfect fit. As this is such a unique sparkler, you likely won’t find in stores and will have to work with a trusted designer to create for you which makes a magical engagement moment even personal. —Alison McGill
