Kyoto is renowned around the globe for its storied history and beautifully maintained temples. Every sight is a postcard, and the stunning Four Seasons Kyoto—centered in the Higashiyama district—is no exception. The immaculate five-star property offers one of the best spas in the country, in addition to world-class dining, and experiences that transport you to a modern yet old world oasis.
Japanese tradition and western aesthetics come together at this contemporary hotel, which welcomes guests with a bright and open lobby space. In the corner, you’ll spot a one-of-a-kind Hermès rickshaw – a traditional form of transportation still used by some in the city of Kyoto—which is outfitted in the Parisian brand’s signature camel-toned gold leather. Luxury aficionados will appreciate the unique brand collaboration continues throughout the property with a stylish bike on display (unfortunately, not for actual riding) adjacent to the downstairs gym and pool.
If you happen to check in before your room is ready, pop into the elevator and head downstairs to the magnificent 800-year old Ikeniwa koi pond—the centerpiece of this spectacular property. The picturesque garden area is divided into two parts—the Oike (large pond) and the Koike (small pond)—with a stone bridge and walking path around. The Shakusui-en garden is believed to go all the way back to the 1100’s, and was renovated during the Edo Period at the turn of the 18th century.
Adjacent to the pond, enjoy an outdoor lunch at the Emba Kyoto Chophouse. This hotel is all about the details: the daily revolving bread and flavoured butter selection kept us coming back for more. Emba is also home to the delightful breakfast buffet, which serves up both Japanese and western options. Coffee culture runs strong in Japan, and the hotels top notch baristas did not disappoint on any of the espresso or matcha options.
Down the path, find the traditional tea ceremony room—formally the Shakusui-te—which offers a spiritual afternoon experience. Guests can immerse themselves in a customary Japanese practice while also enjoying a curated selection of savoury bites and sweets. Upon request, the experience can also be hosted by a maiko or geisha for a truly special occasion.
Wellness is at the core of this hotel, with an expansive indoor pool, hot tub and gym. No detail is spared in the two floor spa, where ancient Japanese tradition is at the core of treatment offerings—including bamboo rituals and the ultra-relaxing Japanese Shiatsu massage—all inspired by the Heian period (794 to 1185). The trendy Akari facial by Tatcha incorporates products from the beloved skincare brand, as well as lymphatic drainage and plenty of hydration.
The serene spa experience starts with a warm cup of tea before being escorted to one of the seven private treatment rooms, which are spacious and luxe, outfitted with tubs where one can soak in a sake bath. The hustle and bustle of the outside world simply doesn’t exist in this space, where guests immerse themselves in the act of “Kyo no Iyashi” (translation: Kyoto healing). Simply put, this is the most relaxed and refreshed you’ll feel on your Kyoto escape.
Sushi Ginza Onodera is a must for an omakase-style dinner—meaning your tasting menu is up to the chef. Edomae sushi, using local and seasonal ingredients, is served at a counter made from 400-year-old wood. It’s both memorable and unique.
After dinner, unwind in your cozy upstairs abode with an in-room steam and bath to get ready for a day of adventuring.
Kick start one of your days with an early morning up to Fushimi Inari Taisha, making your way through hundreds of brightly orange-coloured gates towards one of the city’s best views. The Kiyomizudera Temple is another legendary sight, which includes walking the car-free streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka lined with shops, restaurants and plenty of cafes. Pop into the My Only Fragrance store after grabbing an ice cream at the nearby Snoopy Chocolat. Finally, the iconic Bamboo Forest in the Arashiyama neighborhood is a natural wonder not to be missed. Visit the local and delightful % ARABICA coffee nearby after your visit. —Cassie Gill
