The Transformation Reset: Why Kortney Wilson & Kenny Brain Believe Life’s Big Shifts Start @ Home

In the world of home renovation, we are often sold the dream of the “perfect reveal”—gleaming marble countertops, staged bookshelves, and a life that looks like a curated Pinterest board. But for Kortney Wilson and Kenny Brain, the reality of home is much more complicated, beautiful, and, well, messy.

The duo is back with their new Home Network series, Life Is Messy (premiering April 9 at 9 p.m. ET), and they are shifting the focus from financial flips to deep emotional resets. We sat down with the designer and contractor pair to discuss how our physical surroundings dictate our mental well-being and why “therapy with tools” is the next big design trend.

From Financial Flips to Emotional Deep-Dives

For Kortney, a longtime real estate expert, the pivot to a more intimate format was born out of her own life transitions. “For years I was very focused on the numbers—equity, resale, smart investments,” she admits. “Then real life happened. I realized homes aren’t just investments. They’re where we fall apart, put ourselves back together… and sometimes cry in the pantry while hiding from everyone for five minutes”.

Kenny, whose nomadic past involved moving across Canada countless times, brings a deep sense of empathy to families struggling to start over. “I’ve had to pack up my life and decide what to keep vs. donate and then how to rebuild after the mess,” he says. “These families have lifetimes of ‘stuff’ blocking them from transitioning into the next chapter, and my past has given me a lot of empathy for that difficult process”.

The Psychology of Clutter: It’s Not About the Stuff

When it comes to the “mountain” of clutter hijacking our homes, Kortney and Kenny argue that the hurdle is rarely physical—it’s psychological.

  • The Ego Trap: “Letting go of the vision of who they think they are or once were is really tough,” Kenny explains. “We attach so much emotion to fancy workout equipment we don’t use or clothes that haven’t fit in 10 years. Once you give yourself the grace to let go of that persona, the items associated with it are so much easier to rehome”.
  • The Guilt Factor: Kortney sees guilt as the primary hijacker. “People feel guilty about what they spent or who they were when they bought something. Clutter is usually just emotions wearing a disguise”.

Small Budgets, Big Sanity

You don’t always need a six-figure renovation to change the “vibe” of your household. Sometimes, it’s about simple, low-cost “micro-decluttering”.

Kenny recalls a baker whose overflowing pantry turned her passion into a frustration. By simply replacing shelves with drawers, she regained access to her ingredients and her joy. Similarly, Kortney transformed one family’s chaotic mornings just by adding hooks at kid-height and labeled baskets. “Sometimes the smallest design fix changes the emotional energy of an entire household,” she says. “You don’t always need a renovation; sometimes you just need a place for the sneakers to live”.

Bringing the West Coast Vibe Home

With spring arriving in Vancouver, the pair suggests using the city’s relaxed aesthetic as inspiration for your own “Life is Messy” reset.

“Vancouver design feels calm without trying too hard,” Kortney notes. “The West Coast vibe reminds people that good design should lower your blood pressure, not make you afraid to sit on the couch”.

Spring “Editing” Tips from the Experts:

  1. Lighten the Textiles: Kenny suggests swapping out heavy winter blankets and dark art for lighter, vintage pieces.
  2. The “Ten-Minute” Trend: To integrate 2026’s earthy greens and airy tones, Kortney recommends “accessories, not permanent tattoos”. Use pillows, plants, or pottery. “If you can change it in ten minutes, you’re doing trends correctly”.
  3. Think Vertical: For small Vancouver condos, Kenny’s “smart design” trick is to move upward. Use slim-profiled wall storage for shoes and hooks for daily items to keep the floor clear.

Tune In: Life Is Messy premieres April 9 on Home Network. After April 9, catch new episodes Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT. —Noa Nichol
