If you still think secondhand starts and ends with clothing, it’s time to zoom out.
From home décor to tech to collectibles, Canadians are embracing resale in ways that go far beyond fashion—and the payoff is big.
“Many everyday items are especially well-suited for pre-loved,” says eBay Canada. “Design furniture often gains character over time … denim and outerwear are built to last … and vinyl carries a sense of history and collectibility.”
In other words: sometimes secondhand isn’t just as good as new—it’s better.
Of course, trust used to be a barrier. But that’s changing fast. “Transparency around authenticity and condition is becoming the baseline,” they explain, noting that services like authentication programs are helping shoppers feel more confident than ever.
So where should you start if you’re secondhand-curious?
“Start with items you know well,” eBay Canada advises. “Home goods are an easy entry point since fit isn’t a factor … starting with familiar categories helps build confidence.”
From there, it’s a slippery slope—in the best way. What begins as a simple swap (a vintage side table, a barely-worn jacket) often turns into a whole new way of shopping.
Because once you realize how much value—and personality—you can find secondhand, going back to full-price, mass-produced everything just doesn’t hit the same. —Noa Nichol
