Prioritizing Honeymoons Over Wedding Parties Is A 2026 Thing

With the cost of living becoming more astronomical by the minute many of us are digging deep and leaning into smart spending in a way we never have before. Everything is under the microscope when it comes to discretionary spending and wedding planning is no exception.

This is exactly the reason honeymoon-first celebrations have become a thing. People are choosing bucket list trips over dream days. What do we mean by that? Couples aren’t actually taking a luxe honeymoon before the wedding (though this can also be a thing!) but choosing to focus their nuptial spending on a honeymoon rather than a big, expensive party.

Honeymoon travel registry Honeyfund recently released some interesting stats as part of its 2026 Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Trends Report backing this trend, drawing on insights from 20 years of Honeyfund data, and a recent survey of nearly 2,000 engaged couples. The most interesting findings? More than 33% of participants shared they are allocating more than half of their total budget to the honeymoon, with 82% saying budget pressure is forcing them to rethink traditional wedding spend. Sound familiar?

As experts in the romantic travel, Honeyfund’s latest findings clearly point to a new and reframed narrative: the wedding is a moment, but the honeymoon is an experience that actually lasts. “A couple’s travel bucket list has become the focus of the modern wedding,” says Sara Margulis, CEO of Honeyfund. “We’ve seen a clear shift away from one-day events and towards experiences that last much longer.”

Other interesting facts Honeyfund included in their trend report: 44% of couples are opting for a micro-wedding; 25% of couples are using AI for wedding or honeymoon planning; and the top ranked honeymoon spot for 2026 is Hawaii.

Rounding out the top three choice romantic travel destinations are Italy and Japan. Also of note are the honeymoon destinations on the rise which include Thailand, Ireland, Japan, Indonesia and Alaska. The factors driving a couple to choose their honeymoon spot: relaxation, adventure, affordability, culture/food and convenience.
