If your summer dining plans need a little romance (and a lot of carbs), we’ve got your next obsession.
Coming soon to Vancouver’s Fraserhood, Maria Celeste is set to bring the warm, wine-filled magic of Portugal’s beloved tascas—aka neighbourhood hangouts where the food is simple, the pours are generous, and no one’s in a rush.
A family story, on a plate
Founded by brothers Justin and Cristian Isidro, the restaurant is named after their mãe (mother)—and that sense of family runs through everything.
Think: a cozy 36-seat space, nostalgic interiors, and a menu that feels like it’s been passed down (but with a modern twist). Justin handles the wine (and trust—he knows his stuff), while Cristian brings serious culinary credentials to the kitchen.
What you’ll be eating (and dreaming about later)
The menu is rooted in classic Portuguese comfort food, with a West Coast spin thanks to local B.C. ingredients.
Early standouts?
- Bacalhau à Brás (salted cod + crispy potatoes = instant comfort)
- Arroz de Marisco (rich, brothy seafood rice that feels like a hug)
- And of course, Pastel de Nata—those iconic, caramelized custard tarts you’ll absolutely order “just one more” of
Wine lovers, this one’s for you
The all-Portuguese wine list is a journey in itself, featuring everything from fresh Vinho Verde to bold Alentejo reds—curated with a deep respect for place and tradition.
The vibe
More than anything, Maria Celeste is about feeling.
“Tascas were always about more than what was on the table,” says Justin. “They were about community.”
Translation: come hungry, stay awhile, and maybe make a few new friends along the way.
Opening later this summer—consider this your official heads-up. —Noa Nichol
