It was an extraordinary night in Vancouver celebrating the 90th birthday of David Suzuki—an environmental leader whose influence has spanned decades, shaping how people around the world understand nature, climate and responsibility to the planet.

Legacy: A Celebration of David Suzuki at 90 brought together artists, activists and cultural figures in a way that felt like a gathering of people connected by a shared love for the planet.

A warm welcome from Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh hosts grounded the evening in place, reminding everyone that this land carries knowledge about care, responsibility and reciprocity with nature. That grounding stayed present throughout the night.

Hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos, the night moved between performances and reflection, featuring Jane Fonda, Bruce Cockburn, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan—and even a surprise appearance by Neil Young.

One of the most striking moments came when Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn took to the stage and performed If a Tree Falls—an environmental message sung decades ago that still feels just as current today.

Suzuki’s own words cut through the room as the evening came to an end. “I’m honoured to get all this attention. But what’s most important to me—now more than ever—is safeguarding Earth. What I’ve always wanted—every day, not just in celebration of my birthday—is for people everywhere to act together on the understanding that we are one with nature.”

By the end of the night, what lingered wasn’t the scale of the celebration, but the message that ran through it: nature, and our responsibility to it, is still at the centre of everything. All proceeds from the event will support the David Suzuki Foundation’s work protecting nature. —Tiffany Thornton
