In an age of smartwatches and instant everything, Longines is reminding us that true innovation never goes out of style.

On June 16, the storied Swiss watchmaker marked the 90th anniversary of one of its most significant horological achievements: the granting of the patent for the Flyback Chronograph. First protected in 1936, the groundbreaking mechanism transformed the way pilots measured time in the cockpit, allowing them to stop, reset, and restart the chronograph with a single push of a button—a revolutionary advancement at a moment when aviation was reshaping the world.
Long before GPS and digital dashboards, precision instruments were matters of necessity, not luxury. From its workshops in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Longines developed a timepiece designed to keep pace with the daring spirit of the era’s pioneering aviators. The flyback function simplified complex calculations during flight, reducing the risk of human error and enabling pilots to make rapid adjustments when every second counted.
The innovation reached iconic status through the legendary 13ZN calibre, introduced into serial production in the 1930s and now considered one of the most coveted chronograph movements ever made. Produced for only a limited period, the movement earned a devoted following among explorers, technical pioneers and collectors alike. Even famed American aviator and Antarctic explorer Richard Byrd relied on a Longines Flyback Chronograph during his expeditions to the frozen continent.
Today, Longines continues to honour that legacy not through nostalgia, but evolution. The flyback function lives on in the brand’s contemporary Spirit collection, including the Longines Spirit Flyback and Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback. Combining COSC-certified precision with modern materials and sleek, wearable design, the watches translate a historic aviation instrument into a sophisticated companion for everyday life.
Ninety years on, the Flyback Chronograph remains a testament to Longines’ enduring philosophy: that elegance and functionality are at their most powerful when they work in perfect harmony.
