Attention coffee lovers; a new espresso machine or rather three new espresso machines have entered the chat.
KitchenAid recently expanded its espresso machines with three new fully automatic espresso machines with iced coffee; the KF2, KF3 and KF4. Each model features advanced grind and extraction systems, quiet mark certification and both hot and iced-coffee options.
While there are not many major differences between the models, some notable differences include price, the milk system as well as the number of drink options. However, the taste and quality remain the same across the board, which based on my experience makes considering one of the new machines worth it – read my full review below.
Unboxing and Setup
Similar to most other espresso machines these days, the KitchenAid KF3 is as easy as can be to unbox and set up. The machine comes as a whole and just needs to be plugged in. There are a couple of additional steps that need to be completed including handwashing the parts prior to use, measuring water hardness levels, installing a filter as well as a milk hose for frothing and adding beans – all of which is explained on the digital display upon turning the machine on.
Prior to the first use the machine does a rinse cycle and prompts users to purge the system, which requires four shots of espresso to be brewed and disposed. After that, it’s ready to go!
First Impressions
While I certainly appreciated how sleek and slim the machine looked, the porcelain colourway really threw me off. It may be because I am typically used to black or darker appliances, so the colour took some getting used to. Thankfully there is also a black matte version in this model, so there are options.
Apart from that, just like setting it up, brewing a cup of espresso didn’t take very long at all. There are over 15 hot or over-ice pre-set options and the best part is that each option still allows for customization, which I was really impressed by. Everything from strength, size and even temperature can be adjusted.
Taste-wise, it did take some trial and error, but I did eventually land on an option that satisfied my taste buds. I loved how light and smooth the americano was. I typically prefer a lighter espresso flavour profile and that option did the trick.
Following the trend, clean-up is easy and straightforward. The machine does most of the heavy lifting with the added benefit of prompts on the digital display to ensure the machine is always running as smoothly as the coffee.
Things to Consider
Going back to colour, I did notice some slight splatter during the pour or rinse cycles and with the white option it was quite apparent and something to certainly keep in mind when choosing a colour.
Another thing to note is that the machine does not have a removable hopper, however it does have compartments for both whole bean and ground coffee still allowing for flexibility when switching roasts or going decaf.
Final Verdict
Overall, the KitchenAid KF3 is certainly a solid choice. It performs well, is easy to use, has quick brewing, the maintenance and cleaning is straightforward and all that at a very reasonable price point.
That being said, it may not be the one for those who are coffee connoisseurs, but definitely a good choice for those looking for an above average cup of joe at home with little to no effort given the fully automatic process. —Sidra Sheikh
