There was a time when planning a dream wedding meant saying yes to every upgrade, every elaborate floral installation and every Pinterest-worthy detail—regardless of the cost. Today, however, a growing number of Canadian couples are redefining what luxury really looks like: intentional spending, meaningful personalization and a celebration that feels authentic without starting married life under a mountain of debt.

For Canadian bride and content creator Sam Kelln, the biggest surprise wasn’t simply how expensive weddings have become—it was how difficult it was to know what anything actually costs.
“What surprised me most wasn’t just the cost of weddings today—it was how difficult it is to actually plan and budget for one,” Kelln tells VITA. “I expected there to be plenty of tools to help couples understand realistic wedding costs, especially in Canada, but I quickly realized there are very few resources tailored to the Canadian market.”
Instead, she discovered a world of hidden fees, service charges, minimum spends and pricing that often wasn’t revealed until after conversations with vendors had already begun.
Like many modern brides, Kelln turned to social media—not for pressure to spend more, but for inspiration to spend smarter.
“TikTok has been one of the most valuable resources throughout my wedding planning journey because it connects you with so many other brides going through the exact same experience,” she says. “My feed is filled with DIY projects, budget-friendly ideas and creative alternatives that help me personalize our wedding without overspending.”
That shift in mindset changed everything.
“What I’ve learned is that a beautiful wedding doesn’t have to come with an unlimited budget,” she says. “Some of the most meaningful details are the ones you’ve put your own time and creativity into.”
Rather than splurging indiscriminately, Kelln focused on details that would make the biggest visual impact while staying true to her budget. She sourced everything from personalized bachelorette gifts and custom cocktail napkins to vintage-inspired cordless LED lamps, table numbers and custom bar signage through Temu.
“The cordless vintage-style LED lamps were by far one of my best finds,” she says. “They create such an elegant, elevated look and add beautiful ambiance to the tables, but they were a fraction of the cost compared to similar options from traditional wedding décor retailers.”
It’s proof that luxury isn’t always about spending more—it’s about spending thoughtfully.
Social media, of course, can make that easier said than done. Endless reels of extravagant weddings and over-the-top celebrations have a way of making almost every couple wonder if they’re doing enough.
“It definitely takes discipline because it’s easy to get caught up in comparison,” Kelln admits. “Every time you open social media, it feels like there’s another ‘must-have’ trend.”
Her solution? Define priorities early.
“We decided what mattered most to us—creating a fun, memorable day for our family and friends—and focused our budget on those things,” she says. “If something didn’t add to that experience or wasn’t something we genuinely loved, we felt comfortable skipping it.”
Personalization became another place where creativity outshone cost. A custom wax seal stamp for menus, personalized cocktail napkins, a custom cake topper and a bespoke bar sign helped make the celebration feel unmistakably theirs.
“It showed me that creating a beautiful, customized wedding is less about spending more and more about finding creative ways to add meaningful touches,” Kelln says.
When it came to deciding where to save—and where to splurge—her philosophy was surprisingly simple.
“I think couples should invest in the things they will experience and remember long after the wedding day is over,” she says. “For us, that meant prioritizing photography and hair and makeup.”
Décor, on the other hand?
“Guests often don’t notice the small details or know whether something was a high-end purchase or a budget-friendly alternative,” she says. “Most people can’t tell the difference between luxury and thoughtfully sourced budget options.”
As planning intensified, having one place to source multiple wedding essentials also helped reduce stress.
“Wedding planning involves keeping track of so many moving pieces, so being able to find multiple items from one source made the process feel significantly less overwhelming,” Kelln says. “It allowed me to focus my time and budget on the elements that mattered most to us.”
Looking back, perhaps the biggest lesson wasn’t about saving money at all—it was about redefining what a dream wedding actually means.
“This process has completely changed my definition of a dream wedding,” Kelln reflects. “Planning on a budget has actually helped me focus on what truly matters.”
Her advice to other brides is refreshingly grounded.
“It’s important to set a realistic budget, stick to it and prioritize the things that genuinely make you happy,” she says. “A wedding is the start of your life together, and being able to carry some financial flexibility into your marriage is just as valuable as creating a beautiful day.”
Because, in the end, she says, the memories—not the price tags—are what last.
“To me, a dream wedding isn’t about having the most expensive décor or the most elaborate details. It’s about creating meaningful memories with the people you love and starting your next chapter in a way that feels right for you.” —Noa Nichol
