Photography is taking center stage in Calgary’s art scene at the moment.
With the Exposure Photography Festival running throughout February into
March and more and more galleries showing local photography – it is
definitely an exciting time for photography. One of my favourite local
photographers for both editorial and fine art, Heather
Saitz is showing a brand new exhibition at the Untitled Art Society.
Beautiful and hauntingly nostalgic, Rooms for Tourists is a
cross-nation look at mid-century motels.

A photographic exploration of the rise, fall and resurrection of the
Canadian mid-century motel.
Weve seen them on our travels their geometric facades and neon signs
remaining as historic highway beacons of the nostalgic motel. Since the
late 1940s, the roadside motel has been an integral part of North
American landscapes and culture.
Intimately captured by award-winning photographer Heather Saitz,Rooms
for Touristsis a photographic exploration of the architecture,
landscape and changing social meaning of the Canadian mid-century motel.
Shot over two years across five provinces,Rooms for Touristsvisits
the nostalgic motel in present day, revealing the rise, fall, and
resurrection of a now-elusive cultural icon.
