Cupid knows, the perfect bottle of wine is essential to setting a romantic mood. Here, our top European picks for Valentine’s Day, all available at SAQ:
red: It doesn’t get more romantic than Tuscany—or its wines. Elegant with stunning mineral, cinnamon and cherries notes, Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2012 ($33) matches with classic Italian dishes osso buco or bistecca alla fiorentina.
white: The exotic Spanish Albariño grape is simply irresistible. Pazo de Señorans in Rias Baixas 2013 ($27) has generous aromas of peach, white nectarine and a bright, zesty acidity. Served with scallop ceviche, this pairing is as good as it gets.
white burgundy: Cooking for your loved one? A fresh steamed lobster with butter is a guaranteed home run, particularly when served with a bottle of Simon Bize Les Champlains Bourgogne Blanc ($36), with lingering notes of lemon, hazelnut and butter.
port: Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without chocolate, and sweet fondue served with port is pure decadence. Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny Port ($20), sold by the half bottle, is a great choice (capable of seducing even the most indecisive prospect).
sparkling: This may be the one time of year when choosing something pink can’t be considered cheesy. Classy and well priced, Louis Boillot Perle d’Aurore Crémant de Bourgogne ($24) offers great value (and is great served with smoked salmon blinis).
