In his paintings, artist Erik Slutsky chronicles daily life in Montreal’s Mile End district, home to hipsters and Hassidic Jews.
It’s also a neighbourhood that bears frequent witness to moments of cultural discomfort, as secular residents share the streets and storefronts with a highly religious community. Slutsky’s work tells this tale through vibrant colour, light form (real or imagined) and composition, and his latest exhibition, at Galerie D, offers a wonderful way to view the nuances of the area and get a sense of what living in the Mile End is all about.
