Boating Etiquette for Guests

August 2, 2016

Do you own a boat? Probably not, but we bet you know someone who does. The world of boating is pretty much all about taking advantage of "Other People’s Boats". Whether you’re a chronic or casual OPB’er, though, here are five ways to ensure the invites keep coming. —Aleeza Khan

Careful what you flush!

If you’re new to boating, this can be hard to remember, but is crucial. Nobody wants to cause an embarrassing clogging issue for their captain.

Wear shoes that don’t scuff the boat

Black sole shoes are a big no-no for boating. Keep it light and boat friendly, especially later when they might turn into dancing shoes.

Always bring a bottle

This rule of courtesy transfers from land to water. Always bring a bottle of wine for your hosts, and if out at sea, make sure that bottle has bubbles.

Offer to help, but know when you’re in the way

Nobody wants a lazy guest who’s in the way. But, if you’re not familiar with boating, know when to make yourself scarce and stay out of the way when trying to dock. You can always help by looking out for driftwood and taking care of the cocktails.

Always use plastic

Glass is a no go on a boat, as it is by a pool. The water can get choppy and nobody needs a deck covered in broken glass.
