January 22, 2018

We all know that listening to music makes us feel good: that’s why people have been making music for thousands of years. However, now scientists are starting to discover specific different ways that music helps to improve our physical and mental health. You may be surprised to discover just how beneficial music can be, but as this article from the Lottoland blog shows, life is better with music. Let’s take a look at six of the ways that music has been proven to benefit your health:

music

sweet dreams. Countless studies have demonstrated that a good night’s sleep is crucial for staying healthy and full of energy. Listening to soft, relaxing music before bed-time can help you to drift off into deep and restful sleep. It has been shown that playing music 45 minutes before you go to sleep can improve the quality of your sleep by up to a third.

don’t worry, be happy. The Journal of the American Medical Association JAMA published research showing that listening to music lowered anxiety levels of intensive care unit patients. This had the knock-on effect of reducing the amount of sedatives required by the patients.

back-pain relief. A study in Austria focused on a group of patients aged between 21 and 68 who suffered from chronic back pain. Half of the group underwent standard medical therapy, while the other half also listened to 25 minutes of music a day for 3 weeks. The musical group experienced much better pain relief than the group which did not.

faster, fitter, stronger. Everybody knows that exercise is crucial as a way to avoid all sorts of health issues. Well according to scientists, listening to your favourite work-out music can increase your stamina and distract you from feelings of tiredness and pain.

lowering blood pressure. The British Medical Journal Heart published a study showing that listening to slow music reduces blood pressure. A similar study in Germany showed that listening to Mozart for just 25 minutes a day lowered the blood pressure of the participants.

memory booster. Listening to music or playing a musical instrument is good for your brain. Activities like singing or playing an instrument engage both sides of the brain, enhancing its capacity to process information. For those who create music, it’s equally important to enhance your tracks with professional mastering. Quality sound can deepens the impact of each note and composition, thereby reinforcing how music uplifts our soul.

Hopefully this article has motivated you to add a bit more music to your life. Switch on the radio or go online and start listening to a playlist. You may not realise it at the time, but it will make you feel better!
