The most challenging thing about shopping for kids? In the car and out of the car as you head from one store to another, again and again and again! Luckily, the Vancouver neighbourhood of South Granville makes the task easy as ABC, with a bounty of unique-to-the-street retailers catering to tots on one convenient shopping street!
Our first stop is Adore Fashions, where there are plenty of designer baby and children’s clothing and accessories to be found (think iconic labels like Moschino, Fendi and D&G). According to Adore owner Tiffany Tse, "We provide the highest quality in the selection of brands we carry as well as the latest trends in the children’s fashion world. We aim to dress children beautifully with the idea that they can grow together with our store. Also, we are an authorized retailer for our brands, which makes us unique to have a reputable relationship with our vendors."
South Granville, she adds, "is a diverse neighborhood that caters to any age group. In particular, in recent years it has brought an audience of young parents and parents-to-be. Being surrounded by other children’s retailers is a compliment to each other and encourages more children and parents to shop in this neighborhood. It also brings in friends and grandparents who are always looking for gift ideas!"
Tse’s personal pick at the moment: this perfect-for-fall girls’ sweater dress from Dolce & Gabbana, made in soft cotton sweatshirt jersey with a colourful logo print and ribbed trim.
On to Igloo Baby, where store manager Gigi Wong explains that her store represents "an opulent world of children’s fashion to be explored. We began with a desire to bring something unique to the marketplace. We carry an elite collection of baby and children’s clothes that allows kids to look and feel as artistic and creative." Her personal shopping pick—this whimsical Oscar de le Renta top—certainly fits that bill!
Being a retailer on South Granville, she continues, is wonderful, "the atmosphere is totally matching Igloo philosophy."
Next up: Leuie, where you’ll love the carefully curated range of European-made childrenswear, decorations and toys—from buttery Italian leather shoes and Spanish-made fashions, to wonderfully crafted toys that have been handmade in Germany. Adds co-owner Sarah Klassen, "We offer a beautiful array of products (exclusive to our shop) both designed and made ethically within Europe—our customers kindly explain that our "Leuie look and feel" makes us very unique!"
For autumn, Klassen points to "a pair of our classic British Young Soles boots, our irresistible Babe & Tess jumpsuit and, perhaps, for fun, our dreamy Woodstock London feather headband" among her top shopping picks.
As for what makes it great to be a kids’ retailer on South Granville, she says, "We have lovely neighbours on both sides of our little shop and, also, South Granville offers easy access from many points to and from the city."
Newest among the kid-focused shops in the area, Bonpoint—opening in early October as the luxury French brand’s Canadian flagship—makes it even easier to dress little ones well … really well. The new store includes Bonpoint’s full newborn, girl, boy, skin-care and fragrance collections, all with the label’s signature chic, playful esthetic (a “must-have anything,” says owner Julia Molnar, “is something with the adorable cherry logo!”).
