Meeting Manolo

May 18, 2018

With a shoe fetish like ours, it really doesn’t get any better than being invited to an exclusive press preview attended by the king of sole himself, Manolo Blahnik.

The event, which celebrated the opening of the Bata Shoe Museum’s newest exhibit—Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes—saw our heel hero take the stage in a light-grey two-piece suit, bowtie and suede oxfords to address the crowd: "I am very proud to be in this temple of beauty, which is the beauty of the shoes. I’ve never seen such a collection of native and European designs. And I’ve been to many museums and it doesn’t exist. This is incomparable. So, I am very, very, very happy and humbled to be here.”

On until early January 2019, not only is this special showing a 45-year retrospective of the master’s work, it’s the last and only North American stop on its worldwide run. Divided by themes and eras, it’s your chance to see rare drawings, sketches and more than 200 iconic Manolo Blahnik shoes, from footwear featured in Sofia Coppola’s cult-favourite flick, Marie Antoinette, to the Sex and the City-famous Hangisi to boot collabs with Rihanna and Vetements.

Our suggestion? Run, don’t walk, to catch this shoe-stopping exhibition in Toronto before it’s gone (just don’t break a heel). —Julia Parfenyuk
