Sustainability With a Twist

April 8, 2018

With ice caps thawing into oceans crowded with plastic, air pollution from fossil fuels and massive deforestation, our planet is suffering big time. Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd and we’re looking for ways to effect change and find purpose when it comes to our consumerism, through our transportation methods, foods we gobble up and the fashion we choose to wear.

saya

How do we get started? Saya Designs makes it easy with earth-loving elegant hair sticks. Handcrafted by artists in Bali, the unique accessories are formed from salvaged root wood left on abandoned plantations around Indonesia. The country’s rainforest is one of the most biologically diverse in the world but also suffers an alarmingly high deforestation rate. To combat this and promote a circular economy, Saya vows to plant an incredible 10 endangered trees for every single piece sold. Inspired by traditional Asian culture, 12 designs are available online, including the fork-like Chanang, plant-inspired Soka Bud and statement-making Moonflower.

Now that we’ve figured out how to maneuver the intricate designs (the website features handy tutorials!), we’re holding our heads just a little bit higher in support of such a sustainable and fashion-forward initiative. —Rachel Johnston
