This May, we’re honouring motherhood by chatting with some of our favourite mom bloggers, influencers and content creators about the highs, the lows and the many moments in-between. —Vita Daily
Hi Nathalie! Tell us a little bit about you and what do you do!?
I’m a born Vancouverite who lives on the North Shore with my husband Rob, four-year-old daughter Juliette and massive St. Berdoodle puppy Riggins! I’m a full-time mom but I’m also working. It is really, really busy, but we make things work via preschool, family and, honestly, I bring Juliette to a lot of my meetings and to the office! I wear a few different hats for my work. Currently, I am the director of social marketing and brand communications for The Original Fusion (an advertising agency and, full transparency, my husband’s company). It’s a new role for me, but it has been fantastic working with him and his team. I’m also lucky enough to get work on some really cool collaborations with different brands via my social channels. I love being able to do this, as it’s a great creative outlet and gives me so much insight on what is happening in the influencer space, which is a huge asset for my role at Fusion. Finally, I also do some on-air lifestyle stuff. I’ve done style segments on Breakfast TV, CTV and Global but, most recently, I have an ongoing segment on TSN 1040 radio called Happy Wife, Happy Life, where I give guys lifestyle advice on everything from style to hosting tips to the best things to give your wife! It’s a really fun segment that I love working on.
How do you use your platform to impact other moms—and parents—who follow you?
I think the biggest thing for me is trying to be as real as I can and show what my actual life is all about. As moms (or parents) it can really help to see that most other people with kids are going through the exact same thing as you—we are all just as frazzled, stressed, busy or, you know, haven’t washed our hair in a week! For me it’s like, we’re all in the same boat here, so let’s support each other and laugh at how crazy life as parents can be!
What’s your personal style/beauty mantra?
Well, right now, it’s “is it clean” and “less is more”—LOL. But, when I have a bit more time, I think it would be to make every outfit count. Whether that’s in a white tee and blue jeans or in an intricate little black dress, wear it as though it’s the best outfit you’ve ever worn and with all the confidence in the world.
What would the Mother’s Day of your fantasies be? And what, in reality, does Mother’s Day usually look like at your house?
That’s so funny, I actually wrote a blog on my "perfect" Mother’s Day last year and my husband was like, seriously!? Haha. But, in terms of a fantasy day? I’d love a gorgeous, sunny Vancouver day, late brunch and bubbly on a patio, some time to myself to relax, BBQ dinner and a nice bottle of Pinot Noir to enjoy with my husband. Honestly, I guess I’m pretty lucky because, last year, Mother’s day looked a lot like that and it was a great day!
Did motherhood come easy to you, or were there challenges (if so, any in particular you’d like to share)?
Honestly, I don’t think it did. Don’t get me wrong, I loved and adored my daughter from the first day I met her, but I think I initially struggled with really succumbing to what life as a mom really is. At first, I tried really hard to be who I was before, the only change being that I now had a baby. It took a while for me to really embrace and sink into the life of motherhood and everything that comes with that. The interesting part for me is that once I let myself do that, the whole experience changed for me. It became so much more positive and honestly, a lot easier.
The hardest thing about being a mom? The best thing?
I think my answer to this could change at any given point, but right now it’s the struggle of finding time or just the absence of time in my every day. Juliette just turned four so right now everything just takes a lot of time: finding an outfit, getting dressed, getting undressed, wanting to tie her shoes by herself, fights about the car seat, having to go through the shoe thing again in the car because she took her shoes off and the list goes on and on. It’s all part of it, but there are days where I just think, where did the day go!? The best thing is 100 per cent watching her develop into this amazing young kid who has essentially become my best friend. Seeing how she learns, communicates and interacts with other people is completely amazing to me. She is this incredibly bright light that I get to spend every day with—how lucky is that?!
