Tasting Notes: Nocino

November 11, 2019

Dining & Wine

The Italian liquor called "Nocino" probably got its name from the following conversation:

"Hey Mario, sit down, have a glass of my unripe green walnuts liquor!"
"Noooooo!"
"Siiiiii!"
"Noooooooo!!"

nocino

Our friends at Ampersand Distilling Company (located in Duncan, B.C.) produced this intriguingly dark limited-edition liquor (snag your own bottle (or gift it to a friend!) at select locations in B.C. starting November 16th, 2019). At 27.1 per cent A.B.V., one could believe we are dealing with a Jägermeister-type drink. That belief dissipates immediately when breathing in the rich, bright and somewhat carrot-cake-like aroma of Nocino. This drink makes us think of dessert, not of annoyed college students trying to sell a tray of $2 shots at a nightclub. That’s a good thing. Nocino: 1; Jägermeister: 0.

What of the taste you ask? Well it’s nutty, of course, but also pleasantly syrupy. If you intend to prepare an ambitious dinner for the holiday season, this can pair very well with an indulgent desert, stand alone as a digestive, or as an additive for coffee. It’s evoked in us a distinct autumn/winter vibe. It is a cosy drink, bottled elegantly. If you get a chance to try it, do not say "no" to Nocino. Guillaume Garih
