How to Get Your Wedding Published

March 2, 2020

You’ve spent so much time, effort and money planning the perfect fairytale wedding—so why not share your big day with fellow brides-to-be? Just like you scoured bridal magazines and wedding blogs in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding, future lovebirds planning the biggest day of their lives might look on yours as a source of inspiration. Aly Armstrong, expert wedding event planner and founder of Fleur Wedding Show, happening on Sunday, March 8th, 2020, at JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, shares her top five tips for getting your wedding published:

create aspirational, print-worthy images. First and foremost, hire a photographer who you trust to execute your vision and meet your goals. Make sure he or she captures a mix of lifestyle shots and close-ups of every exquisite detail, including the cake, stationery, décor and venue. It’s helpful to gather and lay out all of your wedding day details prior to your photographer’s arrival: shoes, jewelry, invitation suite, etc. Work with your photographer to create a shot list in advance to ensure nothing is missed.

share your compelling story. Think about the unique details of your wedding and love story. What stands out as special to the two of you? That includes challenges—after all, you overcame them together, and they helped lead you down the path towards saying “I do”. Share your inspirations, too. For example, is there a couple in your life (your grandparents, sibling, best friend) whose love you hold as standard?

be creative and authentic with your décor. Pay attention to the details, as these are what editors most want to see. Infuse your personality into the décor, or the tableware. For example, you can add a goblet in your favourite colour to the tablescape, or a textured napkin. Switch out the expected flatware for something that’s meaningful to you. Also, personalize! Guests will feel special—and publications will love to see—creative escort cards or place cards. We’ve seen “rustic wedding” a million times; how does your wedding stand out?

be honest about your experience. That includes coming clean about your budget. There’s nothing wrong with having to DIY because you’re saving for your honeymoon—it’s a great opportunity to show off your creativity. Or, if you’ve splurged on an ultra-luxe wedding, emphasize those glamorous details. Editors are looking for authenticity, so be proud of your experience.

credit your vendors. Showing off the vendors who helped you bring your magical day to life is good karma. Plus, editors like to offer tangible suggestions for readers keen to re-create the experience. Promote your vendors!

A few bonus tips from Aly on what not to do when seeking to publish your wedding: don’t fail to follow submission directions; don’t send your submission to multiple wedding publications at the same time; and don’t forget to include links to your vendors.
