Today is international burger day, and we’ll be celebrating by firing up the old barbecue for supper! Here, the healthier burger and fries recipe from Tammy Hembrow’s exercise app, Tammy Fit (she’s famous for working with the Kardashians on Khloe’s Good Denim campaigns in the past) we’ll be grilling tonight. —Vita Daily
Tammy Fit Healthy Burger & Fries
1 small onion, chopped
1-1/2 tsp olive oil, divided
12 oz/340 g 95 per cent lean ground beef
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or steak sauce
1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
2 sprouted whole grain hamburger buns
4 slices tomato
2 leaves romaine lettuce
2 tsp dill pickle relish
5 oz/141 g white potatoes, sliced into strips
Salt and pepper to taste
Heat 1 tsp olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion, cover and cook, stirring often until the onion is softened, 4 to 6 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low, uncover and cook, stirring occasionally, until very soft, 5 to 8 minutes more. Transfer to a medium bowl and let cool for a few minutes. Add beef, Worcestershire (or steak sauce) and pepper to the onion and gently combine without over mixing. Form into 2 patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Coat a nonstick pan with cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add burgers, reduce heat to medium and cook, turning once (about 5 minutes per side). For the fries, preheat the oven to 400 F/204 C. Line a pan with parchment paper. Toss the sliced potatoes with 1/2 tsp olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, flipping halfway though. To assemble, place a patty on a burger bun with 2 tomato slices, lettuce and 1 tsp relish. Serve with ½ the fries. Save the leftovers in an airtight container for another meal.
